Dallas Cowboys Receiver Joey Galloway Joins Columbus Destroyers Ownership GroupDecember 8, 2003 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Galloway, who makes Columbus his off-season home, joins majority owner of the NHL Columbus Blue Jackets John H. McConnell, Ohio businessman Jim Renacci and Buffalo business leader and original Destroyers owner Mark Hamister to further solidify an ownership group committed to building a successful Arena Football franchise on and off the field.
Viewing this as more than just an investment opportunity, Galloway is eager to learn all aspects of sports ownership and team operations. Im looking forward to learning the side of the game that I dont get to experience as a player, he said. Having this opportunity to partner with such a respected and accomplished group of businessmen, not to mention working with Coach Earle Bruce and Chris Spielman on the football operations side, makes it even more exciting.
We are thrilled to welcome Joey to the Destroyers and we look forward to having him actively involved here in Columbus once his NFL season is over, said Jim Renacci on behalf of the entire ownership group.
A nine-year NFL veteran, Galloway started his career with Seattle after being taken eighth overall in the 1995 NFL Entry Draft. He led the Seahawks in receptions and touchdowns his first four seasons and was named to the AFC Pro Bowl as an alternate in 1997 and 1998. After five seasons with the Seahawks, he was traded to Dallas where he has played since 2000 and is the teams second leading receiver this season with 537 yards.
While currently playing for Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, Galloway will square off against Jones as competing owners when the Destroyers play Jones Dallas Desperados twice during the 2004 AFL regular season.
Widely regarded as one games of the fastest players, Galloways stellar collegiate career at Ohio State was highlighted by All-Big Ten honors during his junior and senior years as he led the Buckeyes in receiving both seasons. Beyond his accomplishments on the gridiron, Joey was twice named Academic All-Big Ten and was National Football Foundation Scholar Athlete as well as National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics Scholarship recipient.
Off the field, Galloway maintains an active charitable presence in the Dallas and Columbus communities. In addition to the Galloway Foundation and his annual Galloway Holiday event in which he donates Reebok apparel to underprivileged youth in Dallas, he established the Galloway Family Athletic Scholarship Fund in 2002 at Ohio State. This endowment fund makes possible an annual scholarship award to the student-athlete most deserving from Joey s high school alma mater, Bellaire High School in eastern Ohio.
The Columbus Destroyers kick off the 2004 season Saturday, February 7 at Indiana followed by the inaugural home opener Friday, February 13 hosting Carolina. Season tickets are available now starting as low as $72 for eight games. Information regarding the sale of individual game tickets will be announced soon.
