Kimmee Lewis named 2009 SIFL MVP

July 25, 2009 - Southern Indoor Football League (SIFL) News Release

LAKE CHARLES, La. (July 25, 2009) - Acadiana Mudbugs defensive back Kimmee Lewis has been named the Southern Indoor Football League's Most Valuable Player for the inaugural 2009 season, it was announced today.

Lewis was a unanimous selection in the voting process conducted among team coaches and front offices, league staff and fan balloting that counted as one collective vote. Teams were not allowed to vote for their own coaches.

Except for the two Acadiana votes, Lewis received all 13 possible votes. Louisiana Swashbuckler defensive lineman John Paul Jones was runner-up with 12. Lewis also outdistanced Damien Huren and Sammy Knight of Louisiana and Houma's Derrick Patterson for defensive back of the year in the fan voting.

Lewis' performance in the SIFL inaugural game at Austin (three interceptions, one for a touchdown) set the tone for the season as he registered a pick in each of the Mudbugs' first nine games. He finished the season with a league-high 12 and also posted a key interception in last week's semifinal game at Austin. He also saw significant time on offense, catching 12 passes for 133 yards and two touchdowns.

"Kimmee definitely deserves it - he's one of the best two-way players I've ever seen play the indoor game,'' said Mudbugs coach John Fourcade. ``He works hard and is such a good person. There was nothing he couldn't do on the field. He should be at the next level and I fully expect to see him playing outdoors very soon.''

Lewis is also the league's defensive MVP. Marcus Wilridge of Louisiana was named offensive MVP, Jones the lineman while Louisiana kicker Tommy Hebert and Austin kick returner Darrick Wallace shared the special teams MVP award. Lewis will be recognized in pre-game ceremonies at Monday's inaugural SIFL championship game in Lake Charles between the Louisiana Swashbucklers and Austin Turfcats. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
