Graduating from Winton Woods High School (Ohio) RayShawn Askew was recruited by the Big Ten, Big Twelve and Big East. RayShawn made a verbal commitment to the University of Purdue. Due to the resignation of Purdue head coach Jim Colletto, Rayshawn and a few other players were forced to seek different Universities to attend, with limited time to register. RayShawn found a home and excelled as a four year starter at Elizabeth City State University on a full scholarship. He received a bachelor's degree in Biology/ Pre-Medicine finishing with honors including a 3.6 GPA. During the 2005 season, RayShawn was considered among the elite in his former league. River City Rage of the N.I.F.L. (St. Louis) once referred to him as, "a one man wrecking crew." RayShawn has also enjoyed success with the Ohio Valley Greyhounds of the U.I.F.L and the Cincinnati Marshals of the N.I.F.L.

RayShawn has family ties that extend deep within the NFL and college ranks. His oldest brother Mister Askew, currently coaches running backs at Bethany College located in West Virginia. During Misters college career he excelled at Alabama A&M and Elizabeth City State University. RayShawn is also the brother of BJ Askew, currently a running back for the New York Jets (NFL). BJ was drafted out of the University of Michigan in 2003. RayShawn also has two cousins, Mathias Askew (Michigan State University) and Tab Perry (UCLA) both who currently play for the Cincinnati Bengals (NFL)

"We are very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with Mr. Askew. RayShawn has demonstrated his dedication to the indoor game for years and his addition to the team will be significant. We are eagerly awaiting his arrival to Port Huron. The Pirates organization hopes this signing will help to bring this city and the fans a championship. We are confident with the help of Rayshawn's character, dedication and commitment to excellence, that a championship dream can quickly become reality. I can't imagine we could have found a better role model to bring to this team. I believe he will quickly be referred to as a "Franchise Player" not only within the community but within the Pirates organization as well." Josh Reasoner, President/Director of Football Operations
