Training Camp Recap: June 1

June 1, 2017 - Canadian Football League (CFL) - Calgary Stampeders News Release

Training camp continued Thursday with a pair of practices at McMahon Stadium.

The hunt for a holder

With the off-season departure of Drew Tate, several candidates have been auditioning at camp to fill the role of holder for Rene Paredes on field goals and extra points.

Two quarterbacks have been taking the majority of the reps on the practice field but a receiver and a specialist have also been getting an opportunity to earn the easily forgotten job.

Special-teams coordinator Mark Kilam has been monitoring the competition and is unsure who will ultimately emerge as the go-to guy.

"We're working both Andrew Buckley and Mitchell Gale in there," said Kilam, entering his 13th season with the team. "Rory Kohlert has taken some reps. Rob Maver is actually one of our holders, too, but he's been kicking as well, so those guys are all working it out."

Quotable

Kicker Rene Paredes on his approach to training camp in the absence of competition for his job: "It's the same as every year whether there's another kicker or not. I take the same approach - I work on my kicking game and make sure I'm in rhythm for the couple of pre-season games."

Tomorrow's schedule

Friday brings back-to-back practices with the entire session running from 9:10 a.m. to approximately 11:35 a.m. ENG cameras will be permitted to shoot from approximately 10 to 10:20 a.m.
