Detroit Drive News Release
PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia Soul will conduct a Philadelphia-area open tryout for the third consecutive year, the team announced today. Soul Head Coach Bret Munsey also guaranteed that at least one player participating in the tryout will be offered a training camp contract - including a $500 signing bonus.
The open tryout will be held on Saturday, October 1 at Temple University's Geasey Field. Registration the day of the event begins promptly at 8 a.m. and the tryouts are scheduled to run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Participants are urged to pre-register on www.philadelphiasoul.com for the discounted rate of $40. The registration fee will be $50 on the day of the tryout and checks and credit cards will not be accepted. Cash and money orders will be the only acceptable forms of payment. Individuals not participating in the tryout will not be allowed on the field.
Athletes are required to bring turf shoes and workout attire. Absolutely no "track spikes" will be allowed on the turf. The workout will include a timed 40-yard run, short shuttles and individual positional drills.
Several AFL teams conduct open tryouts and Munsey points to current Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Linj Shell as a recent success story. Shell participated in the Orlando Predators' open tryout two years ago, earned a roster spot with the AFL team, and is now on the Eagles' preseason roster.
"I'm confident that the Tri-state area has a number of quality athletes who can help our team," Munsey said. "We have had success in the past in finding at least one guy to bring to training camp with us and I'm sure we'll find someone again this year."
Over 1,300 applicants attended the Soul's first Philadelphia area open tryout in 2003. Eight players who participated in the tryout were signed to the Soul's roster including 2004 Most Valuable Player wide receiver/linebacker Sean Scott.
Pre-registration is highly recommended. Prospective players can visit www.philadelphiasoul.com/tryouts to pre-register. Signatures for the registration form will be required on the day of the tryout. For more information regarding the tryout, please call (610) 494-5200 x197.
Season tickets for the Philadelphia Soul's 2006 season are on sale now. Call (888) PHIL-AFL or log on to www.philadelphiasoul.com for more information. Don't miss the return of the AFL on NBC in January 2006.
