Shorebirds Swept in Doubleheader by BlueClaws

Salisbury, MD - The Lakewood BlueClaws (23-34) swept a doubleheader from the Delmarva Shorebirds (21-37) on Monday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
Lakewood scored the first run of game one. Larry Greene, Jr. set the table with a one out single. Zach Taylor and Chace Numata each hit two out singles to load the bases. Then, Juan Guzman issued a wild pitch to bring in Greene.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Shorebirds took the lead on a two-run home run to left field by Wynston Sawyer, his eighth of the season and fourth in the month of August.
Guzman went four innings and allowed six hits and one run.
Lakewood took command of the game in the fifth inning against reliever David Richardson. JP Crawford led off with a walk. Then, back-to-back doubles by William Carmona and Art Charles gave Lakewood a 3-2 lead. Later in the inning, Mora hit a single into center field to plate two runs and extend the lead to 5-2. Zach Taylor followed with an RBI triple. Brian Pointer singled to center field to cap the inning.
The Shorebirds trimmed the gap in the sixth inning. Lucas Herbst led off with a bunt single. Nik Balog then hit a comebacker to the mound that reliever Geoff Broussard threw into center field to put runners at first and third. Then, Sawyer drilled a double to the left field corner to score Herbst. Balog later scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by Torsten Boss.
Lakewood reliever Chris Burgess came on in the seventh and held off the Shorebirds.
In game two, Lakewood struck first in the fourth inning. Art Charles led off with a double to right-center field. Two batters later, Greene hit a flare down the left field line to give Lakewood a 1-0 lead. Then, Greene scored on a passed ball and error on Steel Russell.
Shorebirds starter Luc Rennie lasted five innings and gave up five hits and one earned run.
Lakewood put the game away with three runs in the seventh inning against Casey Upperman.
Lakewood starter Mark Leiter, Jr. earned the win over five scoreless innings. He allowed just two hits. Leiter struck out four and did not issue a walk.
BlueClaws relievers Lino Martinez and Delvi Francisco held the Shorebirds scoreless over the final two innings to finish off the Shorebirds.
The Shorebirds managed just three hits in game two.
The Shorebirds travel to Greensboro, North Carolina to begin a six-game road trip on Tuesday, August 20 at 7:05pm.
