Abilene Ruff Riders News Release
ABILENE, TX. : The Abilene Ruff Riders of the Texas Lone Star Football League have inked their first group of players for the 2012 season. The cluster of players signed include; two former Abilene Christian University athletes, Harold Jackson (WR) and Shawn Taylor (LB, DL), returning quarterback Larry Dockery, nose tackle/offensive lineman Alex Joyner, and offensive lineman Archie Alexander II.
"This first group of players under contract are a great example of what we are trying to do here in Abilene" Coach Brannen stated, "not only are they all very talented football players who thrive on competition, but they are all upstanding young men who strive to be champions not only on the football field, but in the community of Abilene as well."
Larry Dockery (QB) who played his college football at Troy University, has spent parts of the last two seasons with the Ruff Riders, starting the final two games of the 2011 season. Brannen says, "Larry is a talented athlete who has gained some valuable indoor experience in the last couple years. He has grown tremendously as a leader and I feel has all the tools to be an extremely successful quarterback in this league."
Archie Alexander II is a 6'8" 360 pound offensive lineman from Austin, Texas. "Archie is a big man that has plenty of indoor football experience. I look for him to be a leader on the offensive line. He has great feet for a man of his size and brings value to our organization from the standpoint that he can play all of the offensive line positions as well as defensive line," commented Coach Brannen.
Alex Joyner joins the Ruff Riders for his third stint with the organization. Coach Brannen had this to say about Joyner, "In the arena game where versatile players are at a premium, Alex is very valuable to us as he can play nose tackle, each offensive line position, and showed last year he can have a great deal of success at the fullback position. I am very excited to have Alex back in the red and black"
Shawn Taylor, an ACU alum, returns to the Ruff Riders after joining the team at the midway point last season. "I look for big things out of Taylor this season. He is an explosive player that makes big plays and creates turnovers on the football field. In this game of arena football where games are most times won by the team that has the football last, a guy who can generate turnovers is extremely important."
Harold Jackson, another former ACU athlete, spent training camp with Abilene last season before an injury slowed his season. "Harold is a big, physical wide receiver at 6'2" 210 pounds. He has strong hands, runs great routes, and most importantly, is a very football smart receiver. While an injury slowed him last season he was still around soaking up the arena game, he learned the nuances of arena ball last season which I feel will put him ahead of the curve when we open up camp in March," Brannen says.
