MADISON, WISCONSIN - Easton Brodzinski logged a natural hat trick for a second consecutive game, and Dryden McKay stopped all 33 shots faced, as the Madison Capitols (7-7-1-0, 15 pts.) picked up a 4-0 shutout of the Chicago Steel (12-2-1-1, 26 pts.) Friday at Alliant Energy Center. The loss was Chicago's second in regulation this season, and first by more than one goal. Brodzinski becomes the first USHL player to record multiple hat tricks this season.
Brodzinski, who tallied three consecutive goals in Madison's overtime loss at Muskegon Sunday, took control of the game in the first period. The scoring opened up at 5:54 when Brodzinski sent a wrist shot past the glove side of Chicago goaltender Tommy Nappier. At the 11:33 mark, Eugene Fadyeyev connected a pass to Brodzinski, who jammed a shot past Nappier's left leg pad. The hat trick was completed at the 11:33 mark; Brodzinski backhanded a shot past Nappier's glove, sending the Capitols into the first intermission with a commanding 3-0 lead.
Physicality picked up in the second period, creating multiple power plays for each side, but the goal lights remained off and the score stayed 3-0 at the second intermission.
The rough play continued in the third period as Chicago's Johnny Walker and Madison's Cole Hults scrapped at center ice in the game's second fight. Penalties continued to be called in the minutes after the fight, setting up 4-on-4 play. Desperate for a goal, the Steel pulled Nappier in favor of an extra attacker with over seven minutes remaining. Alec Broetzman scored an empty net goal for Madison with 6:25 remaining to seal Madison's four-goal triumph.
McKay, a native of Downers Grove, Ill., recorded his first career USHL hat trick. Fadyeyev registered two assists. Madison improved to 2-0 on home ice versus the first-place Steel, previously defeating Chicago, 2-1 in overtime, on Nov. 5.
The Steel outshot Madison, 33-20. Nappier suffered his first regulation loss. Chicago had not been shut out since a 1-0 loss to Bloomington on April 1 - the final loss before a string of 15 consecutive wins that carried over into this season.
The Steel complete the Wisconsin weekend Saturday at Green Bay. Puck drop at Resch Center is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The road trip then wraps up Wednesday, Nov. 23 at Cedar Rapids. Chicago returns home to Fox Valley Ice Arena for two games Thanksgiving weekend - Friday, Nov. 25 vs. Lincoln, and Saturday, Nov. 26 vs. Dubuque.
