Boston Cannons Lose Third Straight to Denver Outlaws, 14-10

Boston Cannons News Release

Allston, MA - Boston Cannons captain Ryan Boyle tallied two assists to reach 400 career points and break the Major League Lacrosse points record (previously held by Casey Powell at 399), but it was not enough as the Cannons (0-3) lost to the Denver Outlaws (3-0), 14-10, in front of 8,353 fans at Harvard Stadium. This is the first time in the team's history the Cannons have failed to record a win through the first three games of the season.

Eventual player of the game Drew Snider (5 goals) scored 13 seconds after the opening whistle to jump start a 3-0 run to give Denver an early lead. Paul Rabil scored from just inside the two-point line on a Boyle assist, followed less than a minute later by a goal from Mike Stone off a pass from Kevin Buchanan. But Zack Greer scored on a power play and Justin Pennington added another before the end of the quarter to give the Outlaws a 5-2 advantage after one.

The second quarter opened similarly to the first, with Snider and Terry Kimener scoring the first two goals. Just over seven minutes in Colin Briggs scored on Boyle's record-breaking assist, followed by Matt Poskay's first goal of the night to make it 7-4. The teams traded goals, with Rabil and Briggs each scoring their second of the game, and the Outlaws held a 9-6 lead at the break.

Boston took control coming out of the locker room, with Stone scoring unassisted and Poskay netting two in a row, on assists from Buchanan and Brent Adams, to complete his hat trick and tie the game. Greer scored twice for Denver before Kyle Sweeney scored his first of the season with 3.4 seconds left in the third, and the Cannons were down one, 11-10, entering the final 15 minutes of play.

Sweeney's goal would prove to be the Cannons last, however, as the team was held scoreless in the fourth quarter for the second consecutive week. Snider added two more and Brendan Mundorf scored his first goal - to go with his three assists on the night - to seal the victory.

Mike Gabel made 11 saves in his first start in goal for the Cannons. Jesse Schwartzman made 17 for Denver, including six in the fourth quarter.

The Cannons will host the defending MLL champion Chesapeake Bayhawks next Saturday, May 18 at Harvard Stadium (7pm). More information and tickets are available at BostonCannons.com.
