SAGINAW, MI -- In indoor football, the scores can be so inflated at times that it takes a real performer to stand out on the defensive side of the ball.

Enter Albert Presley.

Presley joined the Saginaw Sting for the 2015 American Indoor Football League season, and he wasted no time making an impact in their season opener against ASI Reading.

"Albert played a great game," Saginaw coach Greg Wasmer said. "Albert is the kind of guy an offense always has to account for him."

The Panthers didn't account for him early, and he made them pay with a sack and a half on the first drive of the game. He burst up the middle of the ASI Reading offensive line on another drive and forced the Panthers into an intentional grounding call in the end zone for a safety.

He added another sack in the second half.

Saginaw is anxious to see his encore performance in indoor football Friday, April 3 when the Sting host the York Capitals at The Dow Event Center. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m.

At 6-foot-2, 226-pounds, the Georgia native doesn't possess elite size, but his speed and technique have been enough to turn him into a playmaker.

"He has a great low center of gravity, so he's able to get underneath people bigger than him, and he's fast enough to get around people, as well," Wasmer said. "He also has incredible strength for his size.

"If he were two inches taller, we wouldn't be talking about him. The NFL is so caught up in the height and length and things of that nature, or he'd definitely still be playing there."

Presley hails from Marietta, Georgia, and he went on to star with the Akron Zips of the Mid-American Conference taking part in their near upset of Michigan in the Big House in 2013.

Presley finished the season with 39 tackles and 5.5 sacks that year. He was passed over in the 2014 NFL Draft, but showed enough promise to sign as an undrafted free agent with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

But he was hampered by an injury, which led to releases by the Jaguars and Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League.

Now he's back and healthy playing for the Sting.

"We're going to move him around: the right side, the left side, the middle," Wasmer said. "They'll always have to account for him. ... Whenever you have to account for somebody, that's going to help your defense a great deal. The ball has to be out a little quicker as a result. Sometimes they have to come in and double team him and that leaves someone open, as well."

Wasmer said he's also proving to be an adequate gunner on kick coverage units.

Saginaw suffered a 35-29 defeat in the opener, but it allowed two touchdowns on long passes where receivers were open due to miscommunication in the defensive backfield.

"I feel like we've made great strides the last two weeks," Wasmer said. "We were really two dropped balls from winning that game, and the guys realized that."
