Peoria Chiefs News Release

BURLINGTON, IA - The Peoria Chiefs scored in three straight innings in the middle of the game and three pitchers combined on the shutout in a 6-0 win over the Burlington Bees Monday night. The win moves the Chiefs to 16-8 in the second half and 53-40 overall, a season-best 13 games over .500.

"Anytime you can win a series, especially on the road that's an excellent job," said Manager Joe Kruzel. "Even more so on four straight days of commuters which isn't easy to do. It was nice to preserve the shutout which is a great way to end the series and begin a 10-game road trip.

The game was scoreless into the fourth inning when the Chiefs broke through against Greg Mahle. Justin Ringo singled and Carson Kelly, celebrating his 20th birthday, doubled off the wall in right. Ringo came home on a wild pitch though Kelly was stranded at third.

The Chiefs added on in the fifth with help from the Bees shaky defense. With one out Michael Schulze singled to center and CJ McElroy Jr drew a walk. Richy Pedroza singled to load the bases and Ringo plated two runs with a single to center for a 3-0 lead. Burlington should have gotten out of the inning on a grounder to short but the throw to second was dropped by Kody Eaves who lost the throw in the sun. Ringo scored on that play for a 4-0 Chiefs lead.

Burlington first baseman Eric Aguilera lost a throw from third base in the sun as well in the sixth inning for a two-base errors. Kenny Peoples Walls came around to score on a single by Pedroza and McElroy scored on a wild pitch for a 6-0 Chiefs lead.

Arturo Reyes blanked the Bees over six innings and only allowed more than one runner in the same inning twice. He pitched out of a bases loaded in the sixth after two singles and a hit batter to end his night.

"Arturo set the tone tonight by attacking their hitters early," said Kruzel. "He mixed his pitches well and induced soft contact. We were fortunate to get hits when we needed them and took advantage of some of their miscues."

Reyes (6-5) allowed just five singles over six shutout innings while striking out four in the win. Kevin Herget struck out three over two shutout innings with one hit allowed. Jhonny Polanco threw a perfect ninth inning with one strikeout to preserve the shutout.
