Professional Arena Soccer League Update

February 11, 2014 - Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL) News Release

Legends Rally to Keep First in Grasp

2/11/14 - The Las Vegas Legends have had a bumpy road since their big win in San Diego on January 11. They lost games in Tijuana and Dallas and were on the verge of surrendering first place, trailing 6-3 at halftime in Ontario against the Fury.

Instead Las Vegas rallied to tie the game and then came back again from 7-6 down to pull out a big 10-8 win to improve to 12-3. Ontario lost again on Sunday at San Diego. The Sockers finished the regular season 13-3, but the Legends would clinch the Pacific Division title with a win against the Fury Saturday in Las Vegas.

The Dallas Sidekicks eked out an overtime win against a spirited Wichita B-52s team to keep the edge over Monterrey for second place in the Central Division. Dallas will likely finish in second place even if they lose to Harrisburg on Sunday.

Meanwhile Harrisburg had a good chance to gain the final playoff spot in the Eastern Division, merely by beating 1-12 Illinois. Instead the Piasa ended their 12-game losing streak with a 4-3 win over the Heat.

Player of the Week

Josh Grossman and Allen Eller, Cleveland Freeze

The Cleveland Freeze broke a two-game losing streak by dominating Cincinnati 17-8. Rookie Josh Grossman scored seven goals and Allen Eller set a new PASL record with eight assists. Eller also had one goal. Four of Grossman's goals were set up by Eller, who tied the PASL record with seven assists on January 11. Eller vaulted to second in the PASL with 59 points on the season, and Grossman is second among rookies with 23 goals.

Kick Starters - Conversations you should be having about the PASL

Hernandez Sets Sidekicks Hat Trick Record

Nestor Hernandez became the first Dallas Sidekicks player in franchise history to score a hat trick in five straight games. His four goal night against Wichita was capped off by the overtime game-winner, his 19th goal in his last five games.

Texas Still on Strike

The Texas Strikers remained winless and set a new PASL record with their 17th consecutive loss. The Strikers fell to 0-15 this year with an 8-5 loss to Saltillo. Their final shot at redemption this season comes at home on Saturday against the 2-12 Tulsa Revolution.

Mustangs Roll to 15-0

The Chicago Mustangs drive to become the second PASL team to run the table and go 16-0 continued with a 14-3 win against the Harrisburg Heat Saturday. The Mustangs, who have averaged a 6.8 goal margin of victory look to cap the perfect season Sunday against Cincinnati.

Moya Continues Impressive Run

Chicago's Bryan Moya now has 24 goals in his last six games after lighting the lamp six times against Harrisburg Saturday. Moya's 36 goals on the year are two behind Kraig Chiles for the league lead.

30-30-30

The Mustangs also became the first PASL team to feature three 30-goal scorers. Moya (36), Efrain "Wilo" Martinez (35) and Miguel Vaca (30) have all reached the milestone this season. Chiles, Hernandez, and Gerardo Villa (Mexico) are the only other three players in the league who have reached the 30-goal plateau this year.

US Open Upcoming Games

The Bay Area Rosal will travel to Las Vegas to play their quarterfinal match on February 16. To accommodate the game, the Mexico Toros moved up their league game against Bay Area to February 15. The Cleveland Freeze will go to Chicago on February 22 to play the eastern semifinal game.
