San Jose SaberCats News Release

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose SaberCats announced today that they have acquired fullback Derik Steiner in a trade from the Cleveland Gladiators in exchange for claim order positioning and future considerations.

"We really like the versatility that Derik Steiner brings to the football field," said Owner/Head Coach Darren Arbet. "He can pass block, he can catch the ball out of the back field, and he knows how to gain the tough yards near the goal line."

Steiner (6-1, 305, Morehead St.) is a two-year Arena Football veteran, spending both seasons as a member of the Cleveland Gladiators. In 2013, he carried the ball 29 times, gaining 168 yards and six touchdowns. He also caught 14 passes for 122 yards and another score. During his rookie season in 2012, Steiner appeared in 13 games for the Gladiators. Over the course of the season, he rushed 26 times for 57 yards and five touchdowns. He also tacked on eight catches for 63 yards and two scores.

Before joining the AFL, Steiner spent the 2011 season with the Trenton Steel of the Southern Indoor Football League and 2010 with the Green Bay Blizzard of the Indoor Football League.

Steiner played four seasons of college football as a member of the Morehead State University Eagles. Over the course of his career, mostly as a defensive tackle, he notched 146 total tackles with 41 tackles for loss and 11 sacks. In both 2008 and 2009, his final two years at Morehead State, Steiner earned First Team All-Pioneer League honors. In 2007 as a sophomore, he was named to the All-Pioneer League Second Team.
