The Acadiana Cane Cutters are inching closer and closer to the first pitch of their third season of Texas Collegiate League Baseball this summer. The Cane Cutters' Front Office was again hard at work to start the week, announcing the signing of three more players from the Magnolia State on Monday.
Mississippi natives Jason McDonald and Christian Talley will be welcomed additions to the cast of arms, while position player Ben Slaton will be tasked with patrolling Fabacher Field's outfield come May.
Right-hander Jason McDonald, a sophomore from Lucedale, Mississippi, can look forward to giving the Cane Cutters some quality innings on the bump once he completes his second spring as a relief pitcher for Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. In 2013, he has already put together four solid appearances en route to what will surely be some hefty playing time. As a freshman in 2012, McDonald performed well in his brief taste of the action. He surrendered only 10 hits in 12.2 innings, while tallying nearly one strikeout per appearance.
Hailing from Diamondhead, Mississippi, 6'4" sophomore Christian Talley is primed to be a fixture for the Cane Cutters' rotation. As a starting pitcher for the Pearl River Community College Wildcats, Tally looks to build upon the successes he experienced during his freshman campaign. Last season, Talley led Pearl River with 57 innings pitched on his way to booking a 4-1 record and miniscule 2.37 ERA. In 2012, the youngster also collected 39 strikeouts, which was good enough for tops on the Wildcats' pitching staff.
Junior Ben Slaton of Magnolia, Mississippi, will be assigned to provide stability to the Cane Cutters' outfield this summer. Early in 2013, the Old Dominion outfielder is off to a sizzling start at the plate. In 10 games, Slaton is driving the ball at a better than .400 clip, accounting for 9 RBIs, and one long ball. With Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in 2012, Slaton had a sophomore stay to remember, finishing with a .363 average, a team best 45 runs batted in, and 12 round-trippers.
The Acadiana Cane Cutters will begin the 2013 Texas Collegiate League season on Thursday night, May 30, when the Brazos Valley Bombers stop by for a 7:00pm first pitch.
