Professional Arena Soccer League Update

January 8, 2013 - Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL) News Release

Sidekicks Winning Streak Halted in Chicago

1/8/13 - The Chicago Mustangs pushed their winning streak to seven in a row with a thrilling 8-7 overtime victory over the previously undefeated Dallas Sidekicks. The Mustangs (8-2) now sit just 1/2 game behind the Sidekicks (8-1) with a rematch scheduled for Saturday at the Allen Events Center.

While the Mustangs run has been impressive, they have been living on the edge with four straight one-goal wins. On Sunday the Mustangs squandered a 7-5 lead against Dallas, but 19-year old Bryan Velazquez sent the Chicago crowd into a frenzy when he put home Nestor Hernandez's rebound in sudden death.

Velazquez, who has found the back of the net in eight of his last nine games, has been a key player for the Mustangs with 16 goals in 10 games.

Player of the Week

Joe Kapinos, Detroit Waza

Rookie goalkeeper Joe Kapinos has been the anchor of the Detroit Waza defense this season. The 23-year old has ably filled the void left by the departure of Vito Lonigro, who was voted All -League First Team last year. Kapinos is 8-0 with a golden 4.13 GAA for the first place Waza. Over the weekend Kapinos led Detroit to 8-2 and 8-4 wins over Ohio and Cincinnati, respectively, cementing the Waza's lead over the Kings.

Sockers Streaks at 33, 46

San Diego's regular season winning streak stands at 33. San Diego is also an all-time 30-0 at home during the regular season. Including playoffs, US Open games, and the FIFRA Club Championships, the Sockers have won 46 in a row, surpassing the US Pro Team Sports record of 40 set by the indoor football Sioux Falls Storm in 2008.

Waza Gain Edge in Eastern Division

The Cincinnati Kings and Detroit Waza have been neck and neck all year at the top of the Eastern Division, but two straight losses have put the Kings (7-3) in a 1 1/2 game deficit. The teams met Sunday with first place on the line, but Detroit (8-1) came away with a relatively easy 8-4 win.

Sockers, Sidekicks Drawing Interest

The San Diego Sockers and the expansion Dallas Sidekicks have been setting the PASL attendance chart on fire this season. The teams have already combined to take up the top six slots on the league's all-time single game attendance chart. On Thursday, the Sidekicks drew 4,978, good for 3rd all-time and Saturday the Sockers had the best crowd in their PASL history, 4,680, good for 5th overall in league history.

Still Perfect in Their Own Ways

The San Diego Sockers (9-0) remain the league's only undefeated team, while the Sacramento Surge (0-9) and Texas Strikers (0-8) are the PASL's only winless teams. The Dallas Sidekicks lost their first game on Sunday after an 8-0 start.
