UFL Owners Comment on Recent Reports

Published on October 5, 2012 under United Football League (UFL 1) News Release

Here are some of the comments from UFL President Bill Mayer, who also owns the Virginia Destroyers, and Paul Pelosi, owner of the Sacramento Mountains Lions, at halftime of Friday night's game in Virginia Beach.

Paul Pelosi on reports that the UFL has yet to pay players: "First of all, it is true. The players have not been paid yet. But the reality is they will be paid. We guarantee that they will be paid, and that the coaches will be paid, and we're going to do that very soon. Candidly, we've had some challenges. These teams have been together only two weeks, only one week before that first game, and that was because, frankly, there were significant issues getting workmen's compensation insurance. And we finally got it, but only two weeks ago and the reality, economically is that the cost of it is twice the amount of my payroll for the Sacramento players. It gave us a temporary cash flow problem. We're absolutely committed to paying everybody, and paying them in full. Coaches and players."

Bill Mayer on meeting financial obligations: "We really understand our commitments. If you talk to players that have played in past seasons, they got paid. Not always on time, but there's no one who hasn't gotten paid.

Paul Pelosi on the UFL's niche: "There are so many fabulous athletes who don't make it in the NFL. This is their opportunity to show how good they are and that they deserve to be up there. They're playing for top coaches with very excellent NFL experience and it's their chance to sharpen their game."

Bill Mayer on working with CBS Sports Network: "We hope this is going to be a long-term partnership. We knew there was a demand for this. Last week, with the first play in Las Vegas, we think we made history, because this is the first time an outdoor league played a fourth season (since the old AFL 50 years ago)."Paul Pelosi on working with CBS Sports Network: "The relationship with CBS is fabulous. Up to 100 million homes have the opportunity to tune in and watch us. Our product the first three years was limited exposure on television. I think this partnership with CBS will be spectacular. We offer affordable football, $8 tickets and an average of maybe $16-20, that's very affordable to the family, but the real opportunity is television."
