Arizona Winter League Signs Pedro Guerrero to Coaching PositionJanuary 12, 2011 - Golden Baseball League (GBL) Press Release
"I am very pleased to be able to work with Pete again and help him convey his tremendous knowledge of hitting to these young players," said Marshall. "Without a doubt he was one of the best pure hitters I ever saw in the major leagues, and although he had a bit of rough patch after his playing days were over he's been coaching and working with youth players in the Dominican Republic the last several years and deserves this chance to show what he can offer to the pro game once again."
Guerrero, 54, had a sixteen year big league career. He batted .300 lifetime, was the co-MVP of the 1981 World Series as the Dodgers beat the Yankees, was selected as an All-Star 5 times and during four different seasons he finished in the Top 4 in MVP voting. In the mid-1980s baseball statistician Bill James called him "The best hitter that God has made in a long time." Although he has been coaching at the youth and amateur level in his home country of the Dominican Republic, this will be his first opportunity to work with professional players in the U.S. as he reports to the Ray Kroc Complex in Yuma, Arizona at the end of January for the month long Arizona Winter League.
