Houma And Beaumont Sit Out 2010, Aim For 2011January 11, 2010 - Southern Indoor Football League (SIFL) Press Release
It was back in November when owner Terry Williams had announced that he was planning on moving his Texas Hurricanes franchise from College Station, TX to Beaumont, TX in hopes of rekindling some spark in an area of east Texas that has had arena football since 2003. But those plans will have to wait as the franchise got a late jump on the 2011 season and the SIFL had to ultimately decide that the Hurricanes just would not be able to start by March.
A year after rewarding the city of Houma with a team, the SIFL decided not to return to the city after contract disputes with the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center broke off. Franchise owner's Franklin Thomas and his Conquest Sports organization held the rights to playing dates in the Civic Center after signing a one-year contract before the start of the 2009 season. Midway through the 2009 season, the SIFL took control of the Conquerors due to financial issues with the club.
The Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center contract with Conquest Sports expired in November but the SIFL decided it was too late to prepare the franchise for the upcoming 2010 season set to begin in late March. The SIFL, which still owns the rights to Houma franchise, has yet to name any new owners for the club.
"With our blueprint for success in a regional-based league, the SIFL is the best option for both Houma and Beaumont," says SIFL President Thom Hager. "But in order to make sure both franchises succeed we must work out the challenges in coordinating with new ownership and arena."
The 2010 season for the Southern Indoor Football League is set to kickoff on Saturday March 20th, as the Columbus Lions will be traveling to take on the defending SIFL Champions the Louisiana Swashbucklers. The full edition of the 2010 schedule for the will be released at the end of this week, check back at www.southernifl.com for more details.
