Stars stung again

MARQUETTE - For the second night in a row the Traverse City North Stars' special teams surrendered a trio of goals, giving up three power play goals to the host Marquette Rangers on Friday night at Lakeview Arena in a 5-4 overtime loss.

The North Stars held a 2-1 lead into the second period, but found themselves on the short end of a 3-2 margin 20 minutes later. Traverse City scored twice to open the third frame and took a 4-3 lead, but surrendered an even-strength marker with 3:19 to play in regulation, and the deciding lamplighter with 1:50 left in the overtime session.

The Rangers (16-8-0) pulled even with Traverse City in the NAHL North Division standings, and will go for a sweep on Saturday night in Marquette. The Rangers opened with a shorthanded trifecta and a 4-2 victory on Thursday.

Doug Clifford (Woodhaven, MI/Mahoning Valley NAHL) and Nick Shkreli (Romeo, MI/Mahoning Valley NAHL) scored first period goals sandwiched between a Marquette power play effort, while Ryan Amin (Canton, MI/ Kenai River NAHL) and Kyle Jean (Sault Ste. Marie, MI/TC North Stars/ Lake Superior St.) spearheaded the North Stars' third period comeback effort with goals more than two minutes apart near the halfway point of the stanza.

Seven North Stars - Shkreli, Bo Jacobs (Twin Lake, MI/TC North Stars), Alex Wiese (White Lake, MI/Honeybaked U18), Tim Opie (Troy, MI/TC North Stars), Andy Huff (Howell, MI/Honeybaked U18), Trevor Campbell (Kansas City, MO/Lansing Capitals U18), and Chris Salomone (Homer Glen, IL/TC North Stars) - each dished an assist apiece for Traverse City, which has lost five straight games and fell to 15-9-2. The North Stars' penalty killing unit dropped to 19th in the league with a 78.75 percentage.

Drew Strandberg (Thunder Bay, ONT/Thunder Bay SIJHL) made 22 stops on 27 shots. The teams meet again in the third and final chapter of the three-game U.P. series on Saturday night at Lakeview. Face-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
