Traverse City North Stars News Release

MARQUETTE - The Marquette Rangers turned lemon into lemonade on Thursday night at Lakeview Arena, gulping down a trio of shorthanded goals en route to a 5-2 victory over the Traverse City North Stars in the opener of a three-game series north of the bridge.

Traverse City enjoyed leads of 1-0 and 2-1 in the second period before the hosts rattled off four unrequited markers to pull within a single point of the first-place North Stars in the NAHL North Division.

Dan Radke (Orinda, CA/TC North Stars/Lake Superior State) scored the only goal of the opening period, converting a power play 9:24 in on assists from Phil Wendecker (Livonia, MI/TC North Stars) and Nick Shkreli (Romeo, MI/Mahoning Valley NAHL). After Marquette registered its first man-down marker early in the second frame, Kyle Jean (Sault Ste. Marie, MI/TC North Stars/Lake Superior State) dropped a pass to a driving Eric McLintock (Traverse City, MI/TC North Stars), who found the top right corner on the short side to put TC back in front. Just over three minutes later, the Rangers logged another shorty. Marquette took its first lead 3:29 into the final stanza, added its third man-down goal at 11:13 and iced it with 2:49 to play.

Drew Strandberg (Thunder Bay, ONT/Thunder Bay SIJHL) made 19 saves in 24 chances for the North Stars, who fell to 15-9-1 after a fourth straight setback.

Traverse City retains a 4-2 lead in the annual Charter Communications Challenge Cup, a traveling trophy awarded to the winner of the season series between the teams. The Stars and Rangers will square off again on Friday and Saturday nights at Lakeview Arena. Both contests get underway at 7:30 p.m.
