Lancaster JetHawks News Release
(LANCASTER, CA) - The Lancaster JetHawks released their second Hangar Heroes Bobble Head ballot Tuesday. Among the candidates are a current MLB Manager Dave Trembley, former National High School Coach of the Year Bud Jones, Founder of the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce Larry Lake, the original owner of the JetHawks Matt Ellis and Antelope Valley Press sports writer and JetHawks guru, Brian Golden.
Dave Trembley, who moved to the AV in 1980, was the head coach of the Marauders baseball team for 5 seasons. He then moved onto the Carolina League where in 1987 he was named the Minor League Coach of the Year. He made his major league managing debut in 2007 with Baltimore and was only is only the 7th manager in MLB history to never play in a major league game. Inducted into the JetHawks Hall of Fame in 2008, Trembley was also recently inducted into AVC Hall of Fame.
Bud Jones spent 11 years as the varsity baseball coach at Antelope Valley High School and went on coach the Antelope Valley College Marauders. Jones was named the National High School Baseball Coach of the Year by the American Coaches Association in 1971. Bud entered the JetHawks Hall of Fame as a friend of baseball in the Antelope Valley in 2005.
Larry Lake founded the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce and was influential in brining professional baseball to the Antelope Valley. Lake dreamed of building a stadium in Lancaster as far back as 1982, when he organized an international softball tournament that played host to teams from Taiwan, Mainland China, New Zealand, Australia and Canada. He lived to see his dream come true in 1996. Since his passing in 1997 the Lancaster West Rotary High School Baseball All-Star Game, in which he helped organize in 1975, has been named after him and is annually played at The Hangar. Larry Lake was inducted into the JetHawks HOF in 2006.
Matt Ellis brought professional baseball to the Antelope Valley by moving the Riverside Pilots to Lancaster and unveiling the JetHawks in April 1996. As the original owner and General Manager, Ellis was constantly involved in the community and was instrumental in bringing the Seattle Mariners to Lancaster to play an exhibition game in 1997. That Mariners team included future Hall of Famers Ken Griffey Jr., Randy Johnson and Alex Rodriguez. Ellis was inducted into the JetHawks Hall of Fame in 2003.
Antelope Valley Press sports writer Brian Golden knows more about the JetHawks and their opponents than anyone in Los Angeles County. Golden has been an Antelope Valley resident for 27 years. During that time he has covered everything from Super Bowls to youth soccer tournaments for the Antelope Valley Press. Brian was influential in bringing professional baseball to Lancaster and has covered the JetHawks ever since. Golden has introduced many JetHawks players, coaches and staff to the Antelope Valley residents through his in-depth journalism. Golden was surprised in 2009 when he was inducted into the JetHawks Hall of Fame.
All of these Hall of Fame members have played big roles in the lives of athletes and sports fans in the Antelope Valley, but only one can be immortalized with a Hangar Hero Bobble Head this season. The Fan vote will run for 1 week and the winner will be announced next Tuesday at www.jethawks.com.
The 2010 season marks the 15th anniversary of professional baseball in the Antelope Valley, and since its inaugural game in 1996, The Hangar has produced more than 90 Major Leaguers and inducted 25 members into The JetHawks Hall of Fame. Don't miss out on your chance to be a part of 15 years of Hangar Heroes in 2010.
