GAME HAPPENINGS: WENATCHEE - The Tornado traveled to the northwest this weekend to take on the Wenatchee Wild, but came out empty-handed, losing both of their games to the NAHL's current top team 6-4 and 3-1.
Friday's matchup was a match marked by high scoring, milestones, and back-and-forth play. The game started with the Tornado taking a 1-0 lead just five seconds into the game. Rock Einersen ripped a one-timer off of the faceoff draw from Scott Deur, leading off what would be a big night for Einersen. The goal was the fastest goal ever scored in the Town Toyota Center. But the lead didn't last long as the Wild would net three goals before the end of the period, two of which were on the powerplay.
The second period was the beginning of the Tornado comeback attempt, with Einersen getting his second goal of the night off of an assist from AJ Mueller. Just minutes later, Mico Solorzano netted an unassisted powerplay goal, tying the score up at three goals apiece, a score that would hold until the intermission. Just 1:06 into the third period, Wild forward Dustin McKellar retook the lead for his team. But later in the period, Rock Einersen would complete his hat trick, tying the game up and getting his third goal of the game, his second assisted by Deur. But with the score at 4-4 in the final minutes of the game, the Wild scored again, bringing the score to 5-4 and getting an empty-net goal moments later to bring the score to its 6-4 final.
Saturday's game proved to be a penalty-ridden affair, with two Tornado players getting to make their debut. Newcomer Tyler Sybil was able to step on the ice for the first time in a Tornado jersey, but his stay was short-lived as he was ejected from the game after a fight with Wild defenseman Kyle Brodie just eight minutes into the game. Enforcer Michael Yovanic also made his long-awaited debut.
The scoring didn't get started until the second period though, with the Wild scoring two goals within three minutes of each other near the midway point of the period. The only Tornado goal of the game came in the middle frame, with David Rigatti netting his fourth goal of the season, assisted by Shay Cizmar. The Wild would later tack on another goal to bring the score to its final of 3-1.
Goaltender Dan Sullivan saved a combined 106 of 114 shots over the two-game series. The Tornado also went on only 10 powerplays over the series compared to the 22 the hometown Wild benefited from. Five of the Wild goals from the weekend were scored on the powerplay.
The Tornado are now 7-9-2 on the season. Their next opponent is the Fairbanks Ice Dogs, who they take on this Friday and Saturday. Â
