Five Biscuits Named in Tampa Bay Ray's Organizational Awards

MONTGOMERY - Today the Tampa Bay Rays announced the winners of their minor league affiliate player and pitcher awards. Five current or former Biscuits received recognition, headlined by the Rays Minor League Player of the Year Desmond Jennings and Minor League Pitcher of the Year Jeremy Hellickson.

Jennings began the 2009 season with the Biscuits as the starting centerfielder and was promoted to Durham in late July. Jennings was also named MVP of the Southern League, despite the promotion, and finished the season ranking second in the SL with a .316 batting avg., third with 37 steals (a club record), fourth with a .395 on-base pct., fifth with a .486 slugging pct. and tied for fourth with eight triples. Jennings was also named the Most Valuable Player for the Montgomery Biscuits organization, part of the Rays re-structuring of minor league awards.

Hellickson began his career with the Biscuits in the 2008 season with a late promotion. He returned to Montgomery for the 2009 season as the club's number one starting pitcher. Prior to suffering an injury in May Hellickson led the Southern League in strikeouts in April (33) and was named a SL midseason All-Star. After being promoted to Durham in late-July he went 6-1 in nine starts, holding opponents to a .157 batting average and striking out 51.

Former Biscuit catcher Nevin Ashley was also recognized as the organization's Best Defensive Player.

Other winners, currently on the Biscuits roster were LHP Darin Downs - who was named the Most Valuable Player for the Charlotte Stone Crabs (A) and RHP Matt Gorgen was name the organization's Best Relief Pitcher.
