University of Richmond, Richmond, Virginia- The Harrisburg City Islanders season has come to an abrupt halt tonight at the University of Richmond in an overtime loss to the Richmond Kickers. Surviving the USL-2 Playoffs on their home field, the Kickers netted the only goal of the match in the 120th minute of play. The 2009 USL-2 leading goal scorer, Matt Delicate found the back of the net after a long series of efforts to clear the ball by the Islanders.
The match was a battle from the beginning. Although the end result and the stats defined Richmond as the winner, the Islanders effort was strong throughout the entire match. Chase Harrison recorded an unbelievable 15 saves (10 in regulation, 5 in overtime). Clearly without Harrison strength in the box, the outcome surely would have been different. The Kickers had the share of corner kicks and set pieces and kept attacking the Islanders. Eventually the corner kick in the 120th minute was the play that the Kickers converted into a goal.
The Islanders 2009 season began with a group of fresh faces. In the beginning of the season the Islanders came out with a rush but towards the end of the season the Isles struggled to score. However, tonight during the 120 minutes of play that occurred in Richmond, the Islanders showed what type of fight and he determination they had. A great effort was clearly demonstrated on the field tonight despite the score.
In other play, the Charlotte Eagles upset the number one seed, the Wilmington Hammerheads 1-0. The Eagles will meet the Richmond Kickers on Saturday, August 29, 2009 in Richmond. Fox Soccer Channel will televise the live championship match.
