SIFL The Monday After: No Lewis INT, No Problem
July 6, 2009 - Southern Indoor Football League (SIFL) News Release
So much for Kimmee Lewis' streak of an interception in every Southern Indoor Football League the Acadania Mudbug defensive has played in this season.
After posting 12 interceptions in the first nine games, Lewis' pick run ended Sunday night when the Mudbugs defeated the Texas Hurricanes 44-30. Lewis had to settle for a fumble recovery.
Then again, Lewis' skills weren't in demand as much thanks to a defensive line that pressured Texas QB Kendrick Cheneau for most of the night.
In addition to the opening night logistics, Texas played without starting QB Michael Bishop, who was away on family business. He and Will Pettis are expected to play Tuesday night against the Austin Turfcats.
DUHON DOMINATES: Louisiana Swashbuckler coach Darnell Lee can see Kirt Duhon make 100-yard ames a regular occurrence on a larger field.
Duhon posted the SIFL's first 100-yard rushing night with 103 yards and three touchdowns as LA held off Houma 51-40. Blessed with great speed - he's been clocked in the 40 at 4.28 - Duhon was recruited by LSU as a defensive back before settling for McNeese State, who wanted to use him in the offensive backfield.
``He's a pure outdoor running back,'' Lee said of Duhon. ``He's real quick and real strong - he's bulked up a lot since playing for us. ''
Duhon has rushed for 221 yards and six touchdowns this season.
PROPS TO CHICAGO: Last season, Lee completed a perfect season as coach of the Swashbucklers as they compiled a 16-0 record and won the Intense Football League championship.
So there's some appreciation for the CIFL's Chicago Slaughter concluding their season with a 14-0 mark and a victory over Ft. Wayne in that league's championship game.
``It takes a lot of focus and cohesiveness ... going undefeated is not easy,'' Lee said. ``It's a hard call for a coach because you have those meaningless games at the end and the injury factor. Congratulations are in order for the Slaughter.''
NOTES: The road team has won the last three SIFL games ... LA's Marcus Wilridge holds a 110-92 lead over Acadiana's Anthony Parks for the non-kicking scoring lead ... The North Texas Crunch, who played two games as a SIFL travel team, will host the Independent Indoor Football Alliance's championship game Saturday July 11 against the Texas Wranglers. The Crunch are defending champions.
