ABA Adds Compton Team

Published on April 9, 2009 under American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release

Indianapolis, IN. The American Basketball Association (ABA) today announced that Compton, California has been added to its expansion teams for the upcoming season starting in December. "We have a tremendous group of teams on the West Coast," stated Joe Newman , "and this organization led by former NFL professional football player Tyrone Rodgers, should be a great addition. His background in sports and business is fabulous and we have no doubt that the Compton Cobras will be an outstanding organization on the court and in the community."

Tyrone Rodgers attended the University of Oklahoma and achieved All Big 8 in 1988 before transferring to the University of Washington where he was a 2-time All American, 2-time All Pac 10, Outline Trophy Candidate, Playboy All American and played on the 1992 National Championship team.

After receiving his BA in Child Psychology, he went on to play defensive lineman in the NFL with the Seattle Seahawks and Carolina Panthers as well as in the Canadian Football League (CFL) where he was defensive captain for eight years and Defensive Player of the Year.

While in college and the CFL, his passion for youth was evident as he began to counsel and mentor alcoholic and drug addicted teenagers an continues to do so. He has been quoted: "The only human that can stop my success is me." His philosophy is evident in his indefatigable work ethic during his football career and in the business community.

After being a Correction Officer for 7 years, Tyrone began his all-star success as a businessman, by starting an auto transportation company. And in 2003, he started his own security firm, Rodgers Protection Group and now has such clients as The Saudi Arabian Royal Family, The Mercedes Cup Tennis Tournament, The Boxing Network and the City of Compton, CA, where he integrated facial recognition cameras. He has endorsed and appeared in ads giving support for community services and causes.

"I am very pleased and proud to be a part of the ABA," stated Rodgers. "I've watched the league very closely and in particular its emphasis on giving back to the community and working with youth. It is a perfect fit and we'll do everything we can to represent the City of Compton and the ABA well."
