Indianapolis, IN. The American Basketball Association (ABA) today announced that Valdosta, GA has been added to its fast-expanding professional basketball league for next season. "We are very happy to have former NBA player and former ABA coach Vincent Askew as part of the ABA. He understands basketball and has had extraordinary experience playing for some of the legends in the sport," said Joe Newman, ABA CEO. "And Valdosta fits very well into our southeast division with other teams in Georgia plus Florida and South Carolina. We see nothing but great success for Vincent."
A graduate of the University of Memphis in 1988 and drafted originally by the Philadelphia 76'ers, Vincent played 2 years in the CBA under George Karl, and played in the NBA for the Golden State Warriors coached by Don Nelson, Seattle Sonics coached by George Karl, Indiana Pacers coached by Larry Brown and Portland Trailblazers coached by Mike Dunleavy. He also played in Italy and Greece and coached in both the ABA and CBA. His two boys, Koi (9) and Evan (10) are very exciting and will be working closely with their Dad and the team's youth programs.
"Our goal is to be one of the elite teams in the ABA," stated Askew. "We want to bring an exciting brand of basketball to Valdosta and represent the city with class and dignity. Our goal is to be an integral part of the community. We will be looking for championship caliber players with high moral standards who also want to be involved in the community. We look forward to bringing more "championships to Title Town USA!"
Joan Morgan will serve as Vice President of the team. She received her MS in Business Management from Troy State University and a BS in Business Management from the University of the State of New York in Albany NY. She currently works as Program Manager for the Department of Defense after serving in Information Management and Resource Management for 20 years in the military and has worked as a Business Analyst for five years in the Aviation Industry. She was a member of the Air Force Track & Field Team for 8 years and played softball and ran track at the collegiate level. "We will strive for excellence both on and off the court," stated Ms. Morgan. "They go hand in hand and we will leave no stone unturned to become one of the best in this great professional league."
Will Petersen will serve as VP of Marketing. A graduate of the University of Memphis, he is a former college athlete with a degree in Sports and Leisure Marketing. "My job is very clear. Vincent is going to put a winning team on the floor; and I am going to put a winning team off the court to maximize the potential of community relations, marketing, press and media relations, internship programs and the other things necessary to create a viable business structure. Valdosta is a great city; we are up to the challenge," added Petersen.
