Sky Blue FC News Release
Sky Blue FC - the NJ/NY franchise in Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) - announced today that the team has finalized contracts with six players for the 2009 season. The officially signed players are Brazilian Rosana, Australians Sarah Walsh and Collette McCallum, and Americans Cori Alexander, Keeley Dowling, and Jenny Hammond.
All six are expected to be in uniform when Sky Blue FC opens the season on April 5th against three-time FIFA World Player of the Year Marta and the Los Angeles Sol. Sky Blue FC will host the Sol at TD Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater, NJ with a kickoff time of 4 p.m.
According to Sky Blue FC head coach and General Manager Ian Sawyers, the signing of these six players signifies a major step in the team's progress.
"It's very exciting that we have come to a stage that we have their commitment to the U.S., Women's Professional Soccer, and most important, Sky Blue FC, and that they are fully committed to making the transition both culturally and athletically to hopefully what will be the best league in the world," Sawyers said.
Sky Blue FC secured the rights to Rosana and Walsh during the WPS International Draft in September while McCallum was added as a post-draft discovery player. The rights to Alexander, Dowling, and Hammond were obtained during the WPS General Draft in October.
Sky Blue FC will be finalizing more contracts with players as it approaches the start of preseason on February 28th. The team will be holding open and invitational try-outs on February 25th & 26th before narrowing down its preseason roster. WPS league rules allow teams to maintain a roster of up to 28 players during the month-long preseason.
"We're going into training camp with open spots available," Sawyers said. "We hope this healthy competition will drive performances up."
Tickets are available now for the 2009 WPS season. Sky Blue FC is offering a 2-Game Kickoff Package for the first two games of the season at TD Bank Ballpark as well as season ticket packages and group packages.
