2009 Arizona Winter League Launches With 190 Players

January 29, 2009 - Golden Baseball League (GBL) News Release


(Yuma, AZ. January 29, 2009) The 2009 Arizona Winter League is set as 190 players from six countries, including 41 states in the U.S, and five provinces in Canada have reported to Yuma and will comprise 8 teams with games beginning on Friday, January 30th. This is the only winter developmental/instructional baseball league in the U.S. for professional players that are either under contract or are free agents. In it's third season, the AWL has seen over 100 alumni signed to pro contracts with major league, independent minor league, and foreign pro teams.

"This is an impressive group of players and has a surprising number of pro players from Japan and Korea this season," said Arizona Winter League Commissioner Kevin Outcalt. "It's great to bring this exciting level of baseball to the southwest each year and expanding to eight teams this season provides even more opportunity for players and fans."

Playing in cities in southern California and Arizona desert communities with balmy winter weather, the Arizona Winter Legue will be structured in two divisions wth the American Division made up of the defending champion Blythe Heat, the Palm Springs Chill, the San Diego Surf Dawgs, and theYuma Scorpions. The International Division is comprised of Team Canada, the Western Canada Miners, the San Luis Atleticos and the Saskatchewan Silver Sox. The teams will play a 20 game schedule throughout February with playoffs and a championship game at the end of the month. New to the AWL this season are the San Luis Atleticos, Team Canada, and the Saskatchewan SilverSox. Two Arizona Winter League players from the 2007 season are now in the major leagues --Sergio Romo with the San Francisco Giants and Scott Richmond with the Toronto Blue Jays. Based in Yuma, Arizona the AWL is estimated to provide economic mpact of over $2M to Yuma through hotel rooms, restaurants, payroll, transportation, game day revenue, merchandise, and spending by family, friends, and fans coming to town for the games. In addition over 100 jobs are provided by the teams across the league during the season.
