USNAST Guts Out First Win
Howes, Archibald, Creager lead the way
11/7/08 - The United States National Arena Soccer Team got its first win in its brief existence with a 7-6 SO win over Peru in the Torneo Internacional de Futbol Rapido Monterrey 2008.
Greg Howes (Stockton Cougars) had 2 goals and 3 assists and Garth Archibald (Denver Dynamite) had 2 goals and 1 assist. Rookie Ryan Creager (Denver Dynamite) had the game-tying goal and converted the only successful shootout attempt for either team to provide the winning tally.
The US is in third place with 2 points, trailing Mexico (6) and Peru (3) with one game left in the round robin. The top two teams after Saturday's games will meet in Sunday's final as well as a consolation match between the 3rd and 4th place teams.
PASL-Pro League Action
The second week of play in the PASL-Pro saw the Calgary United take two from Denver at the Calgary Sports Centre, 5-3 and 5-2. Both games went down to the wire with Calgary sealing the deal with an empty net goal at the end of each game.
In the weekend's only other game, the Colorado Lightning tried to attempt the biggest comeback in indoor soccer history by first putting themselves in a deep, deep hole against the visiting Texas Outlaws. The Lightning spotted Texas an 8-0 lead before staging a furious five goal rally of their own, but fell short 8-5.
KICK STARTERS - Conversations you should be having about the PASL-Pro
Michael Uremovich, Texas Outlaws
The son of the indoor veteran with the same name, the younger Uremovich scored two goals in his first professional game. His effort also got him a call-up to the USNAST where he made his first appearance Thursday.
Ryan Creager, Denver Dynamite
The 24 year old rookie scored in each of Denver's first two games and then matched the feat by scoring in each of his first two international appearances, including the game-winner Thursday against Peru when the game went to shootouts.
Bryan Klaus, Calgary United
The United goalkeeper made a combined 30 saves in two wins over Denver and gave up just 5 goals to take an early league lead with a 2.50 GAA.
Nic Reyes, Calgary United
With 2 goals and an assist in each of his first two games, Reyes is tied for the PASL-Pro league lead with 6 points. The former Canadian U-20 international player hooked up with linemate Chris Kooy on three of the six goals he factored in.
The Week Ahead
The USNAST continues action with a game against Brazil Saturday. A win, and a loss by Peru against Mexico would put the Americans in the final against the Mexcians on Sunday.
There is just one league games and one intriguing exhibition. The Detroit Waza head to Cincinnati to battle 1790 Cincinnati on Sunday. In a series of schedule changes, the reasons behind which will be announced next week, Detroit now opens the season with 6 road games and closes the year with 7 home games, making it crucial for the Waza to try to steal a few early games away from home.
Sunday also marks the return of the San Diego Sockers, an expansion team for the 2009-10 season. They travel to Stockton for a goodwill match against the Cougars. The Sockers feature several names that will be familiar to indoor and Sockers fans alike including former MLS players Braeden Cloutier and Paul Wright.
