MLL announces 23-man protected lists

Boston, Mass-Major League Lacrosse (MLL), the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, has announced each team's 23-Man Protected Roster for 2009. Teams were required to submit their Protected Rosters late last week.
Among the names not protected for 2009 were several long-time MLL veterans, causing speculation that some may be contemplating retirement.
The Boston Cannons elected to not protect defenseman Ryan Curtis or midfielder David Jenkins. Curtis has been with the League since its inception, having been named to the Cannons in 2001 as one of their three original assigned players. Curtis has played for the Cannons in all but one season of his eight-year MLL career. He spent a single season with the Washington Bayhawks in 2007. Curtis played in all twelve games for the Cannons this past season. In his seven seasons in Boston, he was named the Cannons' Defensive Player of the Year on four occasions. He and Philadelphia Goaltender Brian Dougherty are currently tied for fifth for most games played with 94.
Jenkins, Boston's perennial go-to guy on the face-off, was hampered by injury this past season and appeared in only three games for the Cannons. A member of the Cannons since 2001, Jenkins initially retired following the 2002 season, but decided to return to playing in 2005. In five seasons with the Cannons, Jenkins was 767 of 1547 at the face-off X, placing him fourth all-time in terms of face-off wins, and third all-time in attempts. He has also collected 349 ground balls in his career, which currently places him fourth on the all-time list.
Attackman Michael Watson, another one of the League's original 18 assigned players, was not protected by the Los Angeles Riptide. Watson spent the first four years of his career in Boston, having been assigned to the Cannons in 2001. He was selected by the Riptide with the first overall selection in the 2006 MLL Expansion Draft after having not played in 2005. Despite tallying 40 or more points in his prior three seasons, Watson had just 20 points (9 goals, 11 assists) in nine games for the Riptide this summer. Watson twice lead his respective teams in goals scored, leading his 2004 Cannons team with 39 goals, and his 2007 Riptide team with 31 goals.
Finally, Philadelphia midfielder Roy Colsey was another key veteran who was not protected. Colsey, who has spent his entire career with the Barrage since being assigned to Bridgeport in 2001, saw action in seven games this past season and was tied for fifth on the team in scoring.
After eight seasons, Colsey's name is stamped all over the MLL Record Book. He is currently tenth all-time in goals scored with 173, and is tied for ninth in total points with 268. Colsey also holds the MLL record for most two-point goals scored in a career with 33. His 10 game-winning goals are just one shy of the record held by Mark Millon, who had 11 in his career.
In Denver, attackman Matt Hanna was the biggest name to go unprotected by the Outlaws. A member of the Outlaws since 2006, Hanna played in nine games in 2008 and contributed 16 goals, 2 assists, and 6 groundballs this past season.
The Long Island Lizards included a pair of goaltenders among their unprotected players, choosing to release both Dan Loftus and Nick Murtha. The Lizards struggled all season to find consistency between the pipes, and this move by Long Island would appear to confirm the notion that Matt McMonagle is their preferred goalie going forward.
Those players left unprotected have been released into the MLL Player Pool. However, the Player Pool remains frozen until after the completion of the 2009 Supplemental Draft, which will be held in early December. The exact date of the 2009 Supplemental Draft has yet to be determined. More information on the Supplemental Draft can be found here.
