Sonke Lifts Outlaws To Title Game

Published on August 23, 2008 under Major League Lacrosse (MLL) News Release

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - When a game is on the line, a team looks to its most experienced players to lead the way. For Denver, midfielder Jeff Sonke played the role of the hero as the Outlaws advanced to the NB ZIP MLL Championship Game with a 13-12 victory over Los Angeles.

Sonke, who was named as the Bud Light MVP, scored the last four goals for the Outlaws, including a two-point goal with 3:37 remaining, to lead Denver to the victory.

Midfielder Ryan Powell added three goals with an assist for the Outlaws, who will advance to the title game for the second time in the last three years. They will face the Rochester Rattlers, a 16-15 winner over Philadelphia in the first semi-final.

Goalkeeper Jesse Schwartzman posted 15 saves for the Outlaws, including 11 in the first half.

Rookie attackman Kevin Huntley led the Riptide in a losing effort, scoring three goals, including a two-point marker to start the fourth quarter. Attackman Chazz Woodson scored twice with an assist.

The Rattlers and the Outlaws will be meeting for the first time in a postseason setting, but have met once before during the regular season. Rochester earned a 27-26 victory over Denver last year at INVESCO Field at Mile High.

The 2008 NB ZIP MLL Championship Game will air live at 1:00 PM ET on Sunday on ESPN2 and ESPN2 HD. The game will also be streamed live on ESPN360.com.
