Wesley Wright Notches Win for Astros

Published on April 4, 2008 under Hawaii Winter Baseball 2 (HWB 2) News Release

Former Hawaii Winter Baseball pitcher Wesley Wright notched his first career major league victory this afternoon for Houston as the Astros nipped the Chicago Cubs, 4-3, at Wrigley Field.

Wright, a member of the North Shore Honu in 2006, earned the victory after tossing 1/3 of an inning in which he got Felix Pie to ground out to end the seventh inning, and the Cubs' rally. Houston added two runs in the top of the eighth, and Wright got credit for the win as he was the pitcher of record for the Astros.

The outing marked Wright's second appearance of the young season, and the 23-year-old maintained his perfect 0.00 ERA. The Montgomery, Ala. native is ranked as the Astros' top left handed pitching prospect by Baseball America, and the publication also picked Wright as the organization's No. 21 overall prospect.

Wright originally came up through the Los Angeles Dodgers organization, but came to Houston via the Rule 5 draft this winter. This means that Wright must remain on the Astros' active roster all year, or else Los Angeles will have the option of buying him back via waivers. As a young hurler, Wright should continue to see limited action as a valuable left handed specialist out of the bullpen.
