Solid Defense Prevails in AIFA Week Two
Published on March 20, 2008 under American Indoor Football Association (AIFA) News Release
BALTIMORE, Maryland (March 19, 2008) - The second week of the AIFA season was highlighted by several outstanding defensive efforts. The Georgia battle between Columbus and Augusta was the only exception, where the two teams combined for 98 points.
The most impressive defensive effort may have been turned in by the Huntington Heroes, who held the expansion Florida Stingrays to just nine points in a 56-9 victory. The Erie Riverrats scored an impressive road victory at Canton, 38-24. The Baltimore Mariners earned their first-ever franchise victory, 35-32, at Florence. Columbus outscored Columbus, 54-44.
Last weekend's game at Carolina showed the week-to-week nature of the AIFA. In the opening weekend, the Carolina Speed committed eight turnovers in a 42-21 loss at Erie. That same weekend, the Reading Express survived a challenge from the Baltimore Mariners in front of nearly 7,000 fans, 36-27.
But when Carolina returned home to meet Reading this past weekend, everything changed. The Speed overwhelmed the Express, 49-17.
The Erie Riverrats boast the best record in the league through two weeks, 2-0. Huntington and Columbus are undefeated at 1-0. Each team leads their respective divisions.
Six AIFA games are scheduled for this coming weekend, including the Florence Phantoms invading Huntington to take on the Heroes. This game has been designated as the national telecast through Simply Me TV. A replay of the game will be seen the following Thursday night.
