City Stars # 6 Andrew Peterson Signs With The Columbus Crew
July 3, 2007 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Cleveland City Stars News Release
The relationship between the United Soccer League and Major League Soccer has been developing for several years. The pairing of USL and MLS teams in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup as well as friendly matches between teams in the two leagues has gone a long way in solidifying the partnership.
Recently, the Columbus Crew, Ohio's Major League Soccer club borrowed a couple of Cleveland City Stars players for a match against the Chicago Fire. This is a common practice among soccer clubs all over the world, and is an important step in establishing a new franchise like the Stars.
Apparently, the management of the Crew were impressed with what they saw because they offered Cleveland City Stars defender #6 Andrew Peterson a contract for the remainder of the season. He will be moving up two levels in American soccer, bypassing the United Soccer League First Division and jumping right into the top tier of professional soccer in the United States.
"This season has been so much more than I ever expected when I signed on with the City Stars. I was just glad to be able to train and play on a regular basis and to contribute to a new team. I didn't imagine it would lead to an opportunity with an MLS club so soon, but I am grateful for the chance to prove myself at that level. I learned so much from Coach Rennie and my teammates, especially Schulte, this honor is as much theirs as it is mine." Commented Peterson
Congratulations to Peterson for his hard work and to the Columbus Crew for the addition of a solid defender and playmaker. Congratulations also go out to the Cleveland City Stars for providing a training ground for young players and adding to their own legitimacy as a professional level franchise.
Another important accomplishment that will help establish the City Stars in their first year is post-season play. The City Stars have already had a tremendous inaugural season, but the second leg offers a number of challenges the Stars will have to navigate in order to compete for the Division Championship.
Currently, the Stars sit in third place in the standings 7 points behind the reigning champion Richmond Kickers and 6 points in back of the Charlotte Eagles who handed Cleveland its only loss of the season back on June 23rd in Charlotte. With a strong finish CCS could find themselves in the division playoffs with a chance to bring home a championship in their first season.
