CIFL suspends operations of Steubenville, Summit County

June 28, 2007 - Continental Indoor Football League (CIFL) News Release

The Continental Indoor Football League (CIFL) regretfully announces the indefinite suspension of operations of the Steubenville and Summit County franchises.

"We're obviously disappointed that we have to make this decision, but it's a step that has to be taken to ensure the stability of this league," said CIFL co-founder Jeff Spitaleri. "This is in the best interest of the league and all its member teams."

Steubenville was in its second year of operation, but both franchises were in their first year of membership in the CIFL. Steubenville finished the year with a 5-7 record, while Summit County finished the year 1-11.

"Each franchise failed to meet league requirements and it would be unfair to the other teams in this league to let them continue to operate," continued Spitaleri. "At some point, you just have to take a stand and make a decision, and this is that stand."

"I'd also like to say that I personally apologize to the fans of each of these teams," noted Spitaleri. "It's unfair to those fans, but we have to do what is best for this league."

When asked about the possibility of putting another organization in the Steubenville and Summit County markets, Spitaleri said, "it's something we would examine if a solid ownership group stepped to the plate."
