Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Brackets Announced

Published on May 30, 2007 under USL First Division (USL-1) News Release

US Soccer announced on Tuesday the bracket for the 2007 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The Carolina RailHawks will host RWB Adria of the United States Adults Soccer Association. RWB Adria is based in Chicago and plays in the Major division of the National Soccer League of Chicago.

The RailHawks will begin their quest for the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday, June 12th at SAS Soccer Park in Cary at 7:30 PM. If the team advances they will have a chance to play against a Major League Soccer team in the third round. Carolina RailHawks season ticket holders will be able to use the tickets marked Exhibition Game 2.

"We are ecstatic to participate in the U.S. Open Cup," said Carolina RailHawks head coach, Scott Schweitzer. "As with every match, we are going to approach it as if it is the hardest team in the world and not underestimate our opponent. In Rochester in 1999 we had to go into overtime against an amateur team in the first round before we were able to advance. Rochester continued to advance and won the Cup that year. We are also happy to have our first round at home in front of our fans."

Many of the players on RWB Adria's roster are formal professionals or spend part of their season playing in the indoor leagues. They include former Chicago Fire defender Joe Carver and Alen Osmanovic, a former teammate of RailHawks' Chad Dombrowski at the Milwaukee Wave of the MISL.

"The RailHawks are a new club but are playing very well in the first division of the United Soccer Leagues so the odds are against us," said RWB Adria head coach Minos Vlamakis. "It's going to be tough making sure our best players are available to travel to North Carolina for a match in the middle of the work week, but the team is happy that we are given an opportunity to play against a professional team."

The U.S. Open Cup is an annual competition open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with the U.S. Soccer and includes teams from the MLS, USL-1, USL-2, PDL and the USASA. It is the oldest annual team tournament in the U.S. sports history and among the oldest soccer tournaments of its type in the world. In 1999, the competition was renamed to honor long-time soccer pioneer Lamar Hunt.
