
City Islanders will host Aegean Hawks FC in First Round of U.S. Open Cup

Harrisburg, PA, May 29, 2007) - The Harrisburg City Islanders professional soccer team announced today that their first-round opponent in the U.S. Open Cup will be the Aegean Hawks FC (USASA) from the DC / Virginia area. The match will take place on Tuesday June 12 at Skyline Sports Complex on City Island in downtown Harrisburg, PA. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:05pm. Tickets will go on sale to the general public on Wednesday May 30 and Season Ticket Holders should use EVENT 2 tickets. Youth PRO PASSES will be accepted for this match.
This is the first season, in their brief existence, that the City Islanders have qualified for the tournament and it will be the first U.S. Open Cup Match ever played on City Island. The Islanders (3-1-3) are off to an excellent start in the United Soccer Leagues Second Division and will next face the undefeated Cleveland City Stars (4-0-1) at Skyline Sports Complex on City Island on Saturday June 2 with kickoff slated for 7:05pm.
Dating back to 1914, the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is the oldest cup competition in United States soccer and is among the oldest in the world. Open to all affiliated amateur and professional teams in the United States, the annual U.S. Open Cup is an 90-year-old single-elimination tournament. In a nutshell, the U.S. Open Cup is very similar to domestic cup competitions popular throughout Europe, South America and the rest of the world. Cup competitions, which usually run concurrent with a country's league season, are open in the early stages to any club that can qualify, giving local amateur teams a chance to compete against the best teams a country has to offer.
