The Milwaukee Brewers today named Stars 3B Ryan Braun and RHP Yovani Gallardo recipients of the 2006 Robin Yount Performance Award as the team's minor-league player and pitcher of the year. The announcement was made by Special Assistant to the General Manager/Director of Player Development Reid Nichols.
Braun, 22, split the season between Class-A Brevard County and Huntsville and batted a combined .289 with 22 HR, 77 RBI and 26 stolen bases in 118 games. He was selected by the Brewers in the first round (eighth overall) of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft, and led the Stars with 15 home runs in the regular season, and had a big part in boosting the Stars to the North Division Championship.
Gallardo, 20, also split the season between Class-A Brevard County and Huntsville, going a combined 11-5 with a 1.86 ERA in 26 starts. He held opponents to a .192 batting average while striking out 188 batters in just 155.0 innings. Gallardo was selected by the Brewers in the second round of the 2004 First-Year Player Draft, and was the winning pitcher in game two of the divisional series with the Chattanooga Lookouts, in which the Stars swept.
Braun and Gallardo both participated in the 2006 All-Star Futures Game and were Florida State League All-Star selections.
The two players will be presented with their awards prior to the Brewers vs. Giants game this Saturday, September 23.
