Daniel resigns as League Deputy Commissioner
Published on August 14, 2006 under National Lacrosse League (NLL) News Release
The National Lacrosse League has announced that Deputy Commissioner & General Counsel George Daniel has resigned from his position with the league and has been hired as Team President and Governor of the league's expansion New York City franchise. Both transactions are effective immediately. Daniel will lead the yet-to-be-named New York NLL team, which begins play in January 2007 at Madison Square Garden.
"I would like to thank Commissioner Jim Jennings for giving me the opportunity to serve as Deputy Commissioner & General Counsel over the last six years. Working with Jim during the tremendous growth of the NLL over the last six years has been the experience of a lifetime. I also want to thank the ownership group of the NLL's New York franchise in providing me this opportunity to serve as Team President. I am looking forward to the challenge of building an expansion franchise in the world's most dynamic city."
Daniel, who was hired by Commissioner Jim Jennings in September of 2000, has served as the league's second-in-command for the past six seasons, taking the lead a variety of key tasks including collective bargaining with the player's association.
"George has been a driving force in establishing this league to where it is today", said NLL Commissioner Jim Jennings. "Without him, the league would not have accomplished national expansion, national television and labor peace with the player's association. Although we're sad to see him leave the league office, we're happy that he's going to be taking the reins of what will become one of our premier franchises as team president. With George at the helm, the New York franchise will be very successful for years to come. We look forward to working with George in his exciting new position."
Daniel will continue to serve on the league's Labor Committee. A successor to Daniel at the league office has not yet been named.
The expansion New York franchise was formally announced by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg at a news conference on July 11th. The franchise is owned by a group of prominent New York investors, led by Mr. Gary Rosenbach, founder of the Galleon Group.
Earlier, the New York club named Adam Mueller as head coach. New York presently holds the top overall selection in the 2006 NLL Entry Draft, which takes place in New York City at the Theater Lobby at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday, September 13 at 8PM Eastern.
