Top two in fight for first as season reaches halfway mark

THE top two teams in the NFL Europe League standings will face off for the first team this season when the Rhein Fire (4-0) visits the Amsterdam Admirals (3-1) on Saturday afternoon.

Both clubs head into the contest in top form. The Admirals have won their last three contests following an opening weekend loss and the Fire has opened the season 4-0 for the first time since 1998, when they went on to win the World Bowl.

In what is a hugely important week for all six NFL Europe League teams as the 2006 season reaches the halfway mark, the action will continue with the Hamburg Sea Devils (0-3-1) going in search of their first win of the year when they welcome the Frankfurt Galaxy (2-2) to the AOL Arena.

The action concludes with Monday Night Football in the German capital as the Berlin Thunder (1-2-1) look to end a three-game streak without a win when they take on the Cologne Centurions (1-3) at Olympic Stadium. Like Berlin, the Centurions also have not won since opening weekend and will be keen for a victory.

Admirals head coach BART ANDRUS is happy with the shape his team is in heading into a huge game against the Rhein Fire. Amsterdam heads into that contest fresh from a big away win in Berlin.

He says: "Road wins in this league are tough. I was very pleased with the way our guys prepared during the week and the way they played the game. Our guys have stood up to the challenge this season and the important thing now is to prepare for the Rhein Fire."

Rhein's JIM TOMSULA saw his team pull away from the Sea Devils in the fourth quarter last week to open the season 4-0.

The rookie head coach says: "We stuttered a few times and made some mistakes but we showed our character. We came out good, got sluggish in the middle and then came out hard and found it at the end."

Hamburg Sea Devils head coach JACK BICKNELL has yet to guide his team to victory this season but he remains a staunch supporter of his players, stating: "I am proud of my team. They play and practice hard but they are just not having much luck right now. It is very frustrating."

Galaxy head coach MIKE JONES felt his whole roster contributed to last weekend's defeat of the Centurions, which leveled Frankfurt's record at 2-2 on the season.

He says: "This was a team victory. It took everybody we had out there to get this one taken care of. Cologne played their butts off and made it tough on us but we came together and finished the game strong. We're excited about this win."

Thunder head coach RICK LANTZ was left steaming following his club's third successive game without a win last weekend and will demand more consistency going forward.

He says: "I am not very happy. We were too up and down last week. We did some things very well but got a little disorganized at times. You can't win games if you play up and down the way we have been.

"This is certainly the worst streak I have had here. This loss makes it a lot tougher to reach the World Bowl. We have less margin for error now. But teams have gotten in the game with three losses so we are still in there."

Centurions head coach DAVID DUGGAN is getting frustrated by his team's three-game losing streak, saying: "This is getting old. It's the same old story - we continue to play hard and our guys give a great effort but we continue to hurt ourselves with turnovers and critical penalties.

"We had some turnovers and penalties in critical situations that hurt us in terms of momentum of the game. We have to correct these problems and it starts with me."

Fire joins elite group to open season with perfect 4-0 mark

BY recording a 31-21 victory over the Hamburg Sea Devils on Saturday evening, the Rhein Fire became just the ninth team in NFL Europe League history to open a season with four straight wins.

And if the NFL Europe League record books are to be believed, that start should be enough to catapult the Fire into Yello Strom World Bowl XIV.

Of the previous eight teams to start a season 4-0, only the 2002 Frankfurt Galaxy has missed out on a World Bowl berth

Here is how 4-0 teams have fared from 1991-2005:

Fire head coach JIM TOMSULA will not be taking anything for granted with six weeks of the season remaining but feels his team boasts mental toughness, saying: "Last week we had one of those games which shows the character of our team. You want to see how your players handle stress and we saw that against Hamburg."

While the Fire is sitting pretty at the top of the table, those further down the standings are not about to give up the chase.

Cologne Centurions head coach DAVID DUGGAN says of his 1-3 team: "We are talented enough to win the World Bowl. I've been 0-3 in this league and won the World Bowl and that can happen if our guys come back with a positive attitude."

NFLEL FACTS: 20 or More

Amsterdam Admirals have scored 20 points or more in all four games this season and in nine of their last 10 contests, including World Bowl XIII. The only time they slipped below 20 points during that time was in a Week 10 loss at Rhein in 2005, when they fell to a 27-14 defeat.

NFLEL FACTS: Almost There

By rushing for 115 yards on 6 attempts last weekend, Cologne Centurions running back ALEX HAYNES averaged 19.2 yards per carry. That would have been enough to break the league record of 15.7 set by Rhein's Jamal Robertson in 2002 but he did not have the required 8 rushing attempts to qualify.

Something has to give as NFL Europe's top units face off

IT will be a classic case of the irresistible force meeting the immovable object when the Amsterdam Admirals play host to the Rhein Fire for first place in the NFL Europe League standings on Saturday.

The Admirals head into the contest on pace to score 312 points this season, which would break the current league record of 310 set by the 1991 London Monarchs.

Amsterdam's offense also leads the league in:

- Total offense (364 yards per game)

- Passing offense (252.2 yards per game)

- Touchdowns (13 - 3 rushing, 10 passing)

- Yards per offensive play (6.8)

- Plays covering 20+ yards (17 - 8 rush, 9 pass)

The Rhein Fire has allowed just 37 points in four games this season and is on pace to concede 92 this term. That would break the league mark for fewest points conceded in a season - 104 by the 1992 Barcelona Dragons.

Rhein's defense leads the league in:

- Total defense (220.7 yards per game)

- Rushing defense (84.2 yards per game)

- Passing defense (136.5 yards per game)

- Touchdowns given up (3 - 1 rush, 2 pass)

- Turnovers (16 - 8 interceptions, 8 fumbles)

Preparing to face the league-leading Fire, Admirals head coach BART ANDRUS paid tribute to Rhein's defense, saying: "They are disciplined, play to their responsibilities, trust each other well and are well coached. They are always well prepared for each opponent they play."

Fire head coach JIM TOMSULA adds: "They are a good football team. We fully understand how good a team they are.

"Amsterdam's offense is scoring a lot of points and they are running very efficiently right now. They have playmakers and they play together well. They can be very explosive."

NFLEL FACTS: Time Lords

Through the opening four weeks of the 2006 season, the Rhein Fire leads NFL Europe with an average time of possession of 35:08 per game. That amount of possession has allowed Rhein to score 83 points (second in NFLEL). By contrast, Amsterdam, which has scored a league-high 125 points, is averaging an NFLEL-low 26:53 of possession per game.

Jones urges team to end road woes ahead of Hamburg trip

HAVING discovered the correct formula for winning at home this season, Frankfurt Galaxy head coach MIKE JONES will be out to find the kind of road success which could lead his team to a berth in Yello Strom World Bowl XIV on Saturday May 27.

The Galaxy - 2-0 at Commerzbank Arena this season - has lost its opening two road games of the year and has only picked up one win away from home in the last eight outings.

NFL Europe League history suggests picking up at least two road wins in a season can give a club the required boost to go on and become World Bowl champions.

Of the previous 13 World Bowl winners, 12 have won at least two road games in their championship-winning seasons. Only the 2005 Amsterdam Admirals failed to win two games away from home but their one road victory, coupled with a 5-0 record at the Amsterdam ArenA, was enough to guide them to World Bowl glory.

The top two teams in the standings this season - Rhein and Amsterdam - has each posted a 2-0 record on the road.

Jones, who has won four of 12 road games during his time with the Galaxy, says: "We would like to be 3-0 on the road from this point forward. We have to execute and not turn the ball over on the road. Every road game will be big for us and we have to play big.

"We play well at home, now we've got to show we can go on the road and play well. I think you feel more confident when you're playing at home and you have the extra incentive to do well because you are in front of your own crowd.

"We have done it at home and now we have to take care of business on the road."

Thunder head coach RICK LANTZ, who won four road games when his team lifted the World Bowl in 2004, admits: "Usually you think, If we can win all our games at home, we're in good shape.' Then steal one or two on the road and you have a pretty good chance."

Road teams have won six of the 12 games played so far this season. In 2005, road teams won just 10 of 30 regular season contests.

NFLEL FACTS: Points Not Punts

Amsterdam Admirals have punted a league-low 10 times through the opening four games of the year. If they maintain that current pace, they will end the 2006 season having punted just 25 times, which would break the record for fewest punts in a season (30, Berlin 2002; Hamburg 2005).

Lucas enters his name in NFLEL record books with 4-TD display

AMSTERDAM Admirals wide receiver CHAD LUCAS (Green Bay Packers) re-wrote the NFL Europe League record books last Saturday while helping his team to a 38-31 defeat of the Berlin Thunder.

Lucas became the first receiver in league history to catch 4 touchdown passes in a game. A total of 14 other players had previously scored 3 receiving touchdowns in a game.

And Lucas also became just the fourth player in league history to score a record 4 touchdowns in the same game, matching the achievements of MIKE GREEN (Barcelona 2001), RAFAEL COOPER (Amsterdam 2002) and KEN SIMONTON (Scotland 2003).

Lucas found the end zone on receptions covering 5, 10, 19 and 50 yards, catching two scores apiece from GIBRAN HAMDAN and JARED ALLEN.

Lucas - who was named Offensive Player of Week 4 for his efforts - has now scored 6 touchdowns in the last two games.

He says: "This record means a lot because it just goes to show hard work pays off. As an offense we work hard all week long, staying after practice running routes, getting the little things down, and it paid off against Berlin. I caught four touchdowns but if everybody else wasn't doing their job, I wouldn't have caught those touchdowns."

Tomsula among good company

In leading the Rhein Fire to victory over the Hamburg Sea Devils on Saturday, JIM TOMSULA has become just the fifth head coach in NFL Europe League history to begin a career with four straight wins.

Tomsula joins a group of four other coaches, all of whom took advantage of their outstanding starts by going on to reach the World Bowl.

Here are the five NFLEL head coaches who opened their careers with a 4-0 record and how they fared in their rookie season:

Fast start remains a key to success in NFL Europe League

AS the Amsterdam Admirals and Frankfurt Galaxy proved last weekend, getting off to a fast start continues to be a successful recipe for NFL Europe League teams.

Of the 12 games played to date, nine have been won by the team scoring the first touchdown of the contest.

Those figures will not come as a surprise to the six NFLEL head coaches as 20 of 30 regular season games played last season were won by the team scoring the first touchdown. In 2004, the first team into the end zone won 22 of the 30 regular season contests.

The Admirals were the kings of the fast start in 2005, scoring the first touchdown in seven of their 10 regular season games. This term, the Admirals have scored the first touchdown in each of their last three games and each has led to a victory.

Head coach BART ANDRUS says: "It is important to score fast. For us, we have to score to feel good about what we're doing. We are disappointed when we have to punt."

Nine of the 13 World Bowls have been won by the team scoring the first TD, including the last five in a row.

Mixed bag for 100-yard rushers

SINCE the NFL Europe League returned as a six-team set-up in 1995, having a 100-yard rusher in your ranks has more often than not resulted in a victory.

Teams with a 100-yard rusher had gone a combined 76-26 (.746) heading into the 2006 campaign. But this season, clubs who have seen one of their running backs top the 100-yard mark have a 2-3 record (.400).

Berlin's MARTY JOHNSON (130 yards vs. Amsterdam in Week 4), Cologne's ALEX HAYNES (115 yards at Frankfurt in Week 4) and Frankfurt's ROGER ROBINSON (103 yards at Rhein in Week 1) all found themselves on the losing side despite landmark days.

Robinson, however, has twice led his Galaxy team to victory this season, rushing for 150 yards against Hamburg in Week 2 and 128 yards vs. Cologne last weekend.

The Galaxy remain an extremely successful club when producing a 100-yard rusher, posting a 15-2 record (.882).

NFLEL FACTS: Run Rabbit Run

Frankfurt RB ROGER RABBIT' ROBINSON (Arizona Cardinals) is on pace to smash the single-season rushing record of 1,057 set by Barcelona's Mike Green in 2001. Robinson has 476 yards in four games and at that pace he would end the season with 1,190.
