Flyers to put play-by-play jobs on eBay
January 26, 2006 - Northern League (NL)
Schaumburg Flyers News Release
SCHAUMBURG, IL- The Schaumburg Flyers Baseball Club will give aspiring play-by-play broadcasters the chance to fulfill their dreams this summer as the minor league baseball team in suburban Chicago will hire the winners of an eBay auction to be the team's official play-by-play broadcasters for the entire 2006 season. The Flyers' 96-game Northern League season will be divided into three separate auctions of 32 games each, and all three auctions will run at the same time. The minimum bid on each term is $2,500, and the winning bidders will travel with the team on the road and experience the life of a minor league baseball team broadcaster. Bidders must be 19 years of age or older and may bid on more than one auction. All 96 regular season Flyer games and any potential playoff games will stream live this summer at flyersbaseball.com.
The bidding will open at 10:00 AM on Monday, January 30, 2006 on a staggered schedule. The three separate 32-game auction terms are as follows:
Starting Auction Times (Game Blocks)
May 18-June 21: 10:00 AM
June 23-July 30: 11:30 AM
July 31-September 3 (Plus Potential Playoff Games): 1:00 PM
All bidding will close at 12:59 PM on Thursday, February 9, 2006. A portion of the proceeds on the three bidding terms will be donated to the Alexian Brothers Health System Foundation.
The broadcast auction is the latest in a series of innovative promotions by the Schaumburg Flyers. It marks the second time the club has partnered with eBay after an exhibition game was auctioned to an amateur team in 2005. Last season also marked the baseball debut of actor Nigel Thatch, the âLeon' character in the long running Budweiser campaign. Thatch pitched in seven games last season.
The Schaumburg Flyers will begin their eighth season in the independent Northern League on Thursday, May 18, 2006. Managed by Andy McCauley, the team will try to advance to the playoffs for the third time in four seasons this summer.
