Desert Dogs double up Rafters October 24, 2005
Dodgers prospects James Loney and Matt Kemp each slugged a two-run homer as Phoenix dropped Grand Canyon, 8-4, on Monday.
Loney received news earlier in the day that he was transferred from the taxi squad, which sees action only on Wednesdays and Saturdays, to the regular Desert Dogs roster, and he made it worth Phoenix's while. The 21-year-old first baseman hit a game-tying two-run blast in the top of the fifth, knotting the score at 2-2.
Phoenix was already up, 5-4, in the eighth when Kemp cemented the Desert Dogs' win with a two-run shot to left center to put Phoenix up, 7-4.
Andy LaRoche (Dodgers) was also instrumental in the win. He went 2-for-4 with the go-ahead RBI double in the seventh, then stole third and scored on a single by Wes Bankston (Devil Rays).
Dodgers farmhand Casey Hoorelbeke (1-0) picked up the win with a scoreless sixth inning, striking out one and allowing a hit.
Eric Duncan (Yankees) who was hitless in his last seven at-bats, broke out of his slide with a solo home run in the first, while starting pitcher Steven White (Yankees) increased his scoreless innings streak to 13 with four shutout frames.
Twins prospect Travis Bowyer (0-1) took the loss, allowing two runs on two hits and a walk over 2 1/3 innings, striking out one. -- Michael Echan/MLB.com
Javelinas win fifth straight October 24, 2005
Alcides Escobar singled in the winning run in a big eighth inning as the Javelinas bested the Surprise Scorpions, 7-4, on Monday in Peoria.
Peoria trailed, 4-2, entering the eighth against Surprise reliever Chris Demaria (0-1) of the Royals. Dan Uggla (Diamondbacks) reached on catcher's interference by Gabe Johnson (Cardinals), and Jeff Clement (Mariners) singled. Corey Hart (Brewers) and Val Majewski (Orioles) followed with RBI singles.
Two batters later, Escobar (Brewers) made it 5-4 with a sharp infield single to Demaria. Gary Harris (Mariners) provided insurance with a two-run double as the Javelinas won their fifth straight.
The Scorpions took a 2-0 lead in the opening frame when Howie Kendrick (Angels) tripled in Josh Anderson (Astros) and came home on an RBI groundout by Billy Butler (Royals).
Escobar, who collected a team-high three hits, notched an RBI single in the second inning.
Surprise's Brandon Wood (Angels) led off the fourth with his 10th homer.
Hart answered Wood's shot with an inside-the-park homer to center in the bottom of the fourth.
In the sixth inning, Corey Smith (Padres) hit his fourth homer for the Scorpions.
Javelinas reliever Chris Buglovsky (1-1) of the Mariners worked a perfect eighth inning for the win. Brian Wolfe (Brewers) retired the side in order in the ninth for his second save.

Sox rally to edge Saguaros October 24, 2005
The Solar Sox scratched six runs out of the Saguaros pitching staff during the fourth inning as Mesa defeated Peoria, 6-5, on Monday.
Mesa started its rally with one out as Kevin Howard (Reds) hit a two-run single up the middle, scoring Brandon Sing (Cubs) and Don Kelly (Tigers) to put the home team up, 2-1.
Five batters, one out and one run later, second baseman Ryan Roberts (Blue Jays) was unable to catch a ball hit by Ryan Garko (Indians), allowing two runs to score for a 5-1 Solar Sox advantage. Matt Murton (Cubs) added an RBI single in the next at-bat to make the score 6-1.
Howard had the only multi-hit night for Mesa, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Kelly and Brad Snyder (Indians) each hit doubles.
Cubs prospect Angel Guzman (1-2) picked up the win with five solid innings, allowing a run on four hits and a walk while striking out a season-high six batters. Jeremy Accardo (Giants) allowed a run in the ninth, but kept the Mesa lead intact to earn the save.
Despite the fielding gaffe in the fourth, Roberts was the Saguaros' best bat as he went 2-for-5, including a leadoff home run in the fourth.
Nationals prospect David Maust (1-2) was saddled with the loss, allowing five runs -- three earned -- on seven hits and two walks while striking out three in 3 1/3 innings. --Michael Echan/MLB.com
