Detroit Drive News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. (Sept. 20, 2005) - Former arenafootball2 Coach of the Year KEVIN GUY has been named defensive coordinator of the two-time ArenaBowl champion San Jose SaberCats, the club announced today.
A former coach and player in the Arena Football League, Guy spent the last four seasons as a head coach in af2, where he became that league's winningest coach and captured Coach of the Year honors in 2003. He succeeds Michael Church, who was San Jose's defensive coordinator in both championship seasons.
"This is a great opportunity for me to work with one of the top organizations in the Arena Football League," said Guy. "I had a great experience in af2 and feel that what I've learned will translate into success with San Jose."
Guy joins the SaberCats after spending the 2005 season as head coach and director of football operations for the af2's Rio Grande Valley Dorados. He led the Hidalgo, Texas-based team to a 10-6 record and a trip to the league's National Conference championship game in just its second year of existence.
The previous three seasons (2002-04) were spent with the Tennessee Valley Vipers, where Guy compiled a 39-9 (.813) regular season record and claimed a division title each season. In 2003 the Vipers won their first 14 games and advanced to the semifinal round of the playoffs earning Guy the league's Coach of the Year award.
Guy's last win at the af2 level, a 65-42 win over Tulsa in the 2005 playoffs, was the 52nd of his career making him the league's all-time leader.
Guy began his coaching career in 2000 when he started the season as defensive coordinator of the AFL's New Jersey Red Dogs before being promoted to interim head coach for the final four games of the year. The following season Guy moved to Florida to become the defensive coordinator of the AFL's Bobcats.
A former defensive back in the AFL, Guy played with three different teams in a career that spanned four seasons. He ended his playing career in 1999 where, as a teammate of Barry Wagner, he helped the Orlando Predators advance to ArenaBowl XIII.
Guy joins line coach Dave Witthun as new additions to head coach Darren Arbet's staff for the upcoming 2006 season.
"Kevin has a wealth of experience as both a player and coach in the AFL," said Arbet. "His knowledge of the game combined with his enthusiasm make him a more than qualified candidate for the position and we are very pleased to have him on board."
A native of Birmingham, Ala., Guy played collegiately at West Alabama University where he played both receiver and defensive back. He and his wife Cathy are the parents of a daughter.
