Sports defeat El Paso 10-4
August 18, 2005 - Central Baseball League (Central League)
Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release
The Shreveport Sports kept their playoff hopes alive as they defeated El Paso 10-4 at Fair Grounds Field. San Angelo also won, defeating Pensacola 8-2. The best that the Sports can hope for now would be a tie. Shreveport would have to win their final two games and San Angelo would have to lose their last two to set up a playoff game.
After El Paso took a 1-0 lead in the first inning the Sports came back and scored three runs in the bottom of the first, highlighted by a two-run single by Enohel Polanco.
The Diablos tied the game in the fifth on a two-run home run by Carlos Sepulveda. Mick Kurhan then gave Shreveport a 5-4 lead with an RBI single in the fifth. However, El Paso tied the game in the top of the sixth at 5-5.
Shreveport continued to take advantage of sloppy play by El Paso as the Diablos committed five errors in the contest. An error by third baseman Marc Mirizzi allowed the Sports to take a 6-5 lead in the sixth. Shreveport then put the game away with four runs in the seventh highlighted by a two-run home run by Polanco.
Mal Winters pitched three innings of relief to pick up his first win of the season while El Paso starter Travis Teeter took the loss.
Shreveport and El Paso will meet in the second game of the three game series Friday at Fair Grounds Field. Game time 7:05.
