Starbucks Coffee Announces Relationship with Major League Lacrosse
Published on May 25, 2005 under Major League Lacrosse (MLL) News Release
WASHINGTON, D.C. (May 25, 2005) â Starbucks Coffee has entered into a unique relationship with Major League Lacrosse (MLL), the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league. As a sponsor of the league for the 2005 season, Starbucks Coffee has created four programs involving each of the leagues' teams in Baltimore, Philadelphia, New Jersey, Long Island, Rochester and Boston.
Through the Goals for Good program, for every goal scored at every MLL game during the 2005 season, Starbucks will donate a pound of coffee to a deserving local fire, police or emergency medical organization.
As part of Starbucks' commitment to literacy, each team will hold a book drive inviting fans to bring new books for donation during a designated home game. The book drive will benefit local literacy partners in each of the six MLL cities and will be promoted in Starbucks stores and to MLL season ticket holders.
Midway through the season, a charity auction will be held at a Starbucks in each MLL city, offering season ticket holders the opportunity to have coffee with their favorite MLL players and support worthy causes. Starbucks and autographed MLL merchandise, as well as unique MLL "team experiences," such as the chance to attend a team practice, will be auctioned off at the event to benefit local charities.
At the end of the season one deserving player from each team will also be awarded the "Starbucks Community Service Award" honoring the player who has done the most for his community during the season.
"We are very excited about this alliance with MLL. At Starbucks, it's not about putting signs on the field, it's about connecting with the community," said Kathleen Richardson, marketing director, Mid-Atlantic for Starbucks Coffee. Leveraging our relationship with Major League Lacrosse will allow us to become more involved in these communities alongside our lacrosse partners. With the programs we have put in place, we will be able to help many deserving organizations."
"It is truly an honor to be in business with Howard Schultz and a classy brand like Starbucks," said MLL Founder Jake Steinfeld, CEO of Body by Jake Global. "The creativity on the part of Starbucks and how they want to activate this sponsorship is truly exciting and invigorating. Everything Starbucks is about, the MLL is about and we plan on a long lasting relationship."
The Major League Lacrosse season began on Friday, May 20 and concludes with the league championship on Sunday, August 21 at Boston University's Nickerson Field.
