Storm To Remember Lucas This Weekend

April 26, 2005 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I) - Tampa Bay Storm News Release

TAMPA BAY – The five-time world champion Tampa Bay Storm will celebrate the life and career of Al Lucas when they take on the New Orleans VooDoo this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Lucas’ no. 76 will be retired and fans will have the opportunity to make donations to both the Mariah Lucas Scholarship Fund and the Al Lucas Memorial Scholarship Fund. Storm owner Woody Kern has already made a donation of $50,000 on behalf of the Storm.

The Mariah Lucas Scholarship Fund will benefit the 2-year-old daughter of Lucas and his wife DeShonda. Storm owner Woody Kern has made a donation of $50,000 to the fund. The Al Lucas Memorial Scholarship Fund has also been established to benefit the children of Northeast High School in Macon, Georgia where Lucas attended and coached. Fans will be able to make their own donations to either fund on the concourse at the Storm Surge Fan Club table behind section 101.

Fans that would like to mail their donations can send checks to The Al Lucas Memorial Scholarship Fund, Attn: Virgil Adams, P.O. Box 928, Macon, GA 31201. Make checks payable to the Al Lucas Memorial Scholarship fund.

The Storm Surge Fan Club will also be distributing black armbands bearing Lucas’ no. 76 and black thundersticks that read ‘Al “Big Luke” Lucas #76’ to those who make donations. The fan club will also have a poster fans can sign that will be sent to Lucas’ family.

Lucas will be the sixth person to have his number retired by the Storm when his no. 76 will be given to his family this Saturday prior to the StormÂ’s game against the VooDoo. He joins Stevie Thomas, Jay Gruden, Sylvester Bembery, George LaFrance and Tracey Perkins as players with their numbers retired by Tampa Bay.

A native of Macon, Lucas was a member of the StormÂ’s 2003 world championship team before signing with the Los Angeles Avengers during the following off-season. He was fatally injured on the field during the AvengersÂ’ Week 11 match-up with the New York Dragons.

Lucas played in 13 games with the Storm in 2003 recording 19.5 tackles. He also had three tackles for a loss and 1.5 sacks with a blocked kick and a safety as Tampa Bay went on to win their fifth world championship with a win over the Arizona Rattlers.
