Action increases as NFL Europe training camp enters second week
Published on March 8, 2004 under National Football League Europa (NFLE) News Release
The second week of NFL Europe training camp is now underway in Tampa Bay, Florida, and all six teams have been able to evaluate their players and start implementing their playbooks.
On Saturday, the Rhein Fire and Scottish Claymores practised together, as did the Frankfurt Galaxy and Cologne Centurions. The players and coaching staffs from the four teams used the sessions to appraise how far they had come in one week of practice, as well as giving the allowing them to hit a different group of players.
"Anytime you go up against somebody different, there is a chance for a team to come together and get a little bit of emotion going," Galaxy offensive coordinator DWAIN PAINTER said. "The players don't have the same enthusiasm all the time for practicing together. That's part of why we do this."
Rhein Fire running back RYAN BREWER continued: "It was a big difference. It was a great opportunity to see where we stand as a team and improve."
The first official combined workouts of training camp will take place on Wednesday (March 10) at the 31st Street Complex in St Petersburg, pitting the Fire against the Berlin Thunder, followed by the Cologne Centurions against the Claymores and the Amsterdam Admirals against the Frankfurt Galaxy.
Admirals head coach BART ANDRUS said: "We're ready to hit somebody else. By the time we get to Wednesday I think that these guys are going to want to see another team. This is a good group of players; they practise hard and listen to their coaches well. Everything that we have asked them to do so far they have responded to, and they all want to be coached."
Admirals running back TRAVIS STEPHENS added: "I just want to go out and get a chance to make some plays and pound on another team. We all do. I think we have taken a lot in over the first week and now it's time to show that on the field against some opposition."
Wednesday's scrimmages are at 9 a.m., 12 noon and 3 p.m. and are all open to the public. On Saturday (March 20) all six teams will scrimmage at Raymond James Stadium.
