UNBEATEN RIVALS CLASH IN WEEK 3; CLAYMORES HEAD HOME; THUNDER AIMS TO MAINTAIN WINNING START

NFL EuropeÂ’s biggest rivalry resumes this weekend as the undefeated Rhein Fire (2-0) travels to take on the Frankfurt Galaxy (2-0) in the first Deutschland Derby game of the new season between the long-time foes.

The meeting of long-time rivals takes place at FrankfurtÂ’s Waldstadion on Saturday evening and headlines an intriguing week of NFL Europe action.

The game marks the first time two undefeated teams have met in Week 3 action since the London Monarchs hosted the Orlando Thunder in the inaugural 1991 season.

On Sunday afternoon, a pair of winless teams will battle for a taste of glory as the Amsterdam Admirals (0-2) visit a Scottish Claymores (0-2) club happy to be making their first appearance at GlasgowÂ’s Hampden Park in 2004 after opening the year with two road losses.

Sunday will also see the undefeated Berlin Thunder (2-0) play host to the Cologne Centurions (0-2), who are still looking for their first victory in club history.

With just two weeks of the 2004 season gone, the three teams at the top of the standings have already opened up some breathing room on the chasing pack.
For the first time since NFL Europe became a six-team league in 1995, there are three 2-0 teams and three 0-2 teams after two weeks of play.
Something has to give in Week 3 when two of the undefeated clubs go head to head in Frankfurt.
Fire head coach PETE KUHARCHEK says of his table-topping team: “We are going to do whatever we can to win next week. We have had our problems the last two times we faced the Galaxy so we are going to be ready for this game.”
The Galaxy – under rookie head coach MIKE JONES - has made a 2-0 start for the third year in a row and has won the last two meetings against the Fire (Week 9 and World Bowl XI).
Jones says: “I am not going to need to say much to get our guys ready for that game. We will be working hard for the game this week.”
Despite seeing their teams struggle in the opening two weeks of the new season, Admirals head coach BART ANDRUS and ScotlandÂ’s JACK BICKNELL remain confident their teams will get back on track.
Andrus says: “We are dealing with a young team here and they are obviously disappointed, but they have made major steps compared to where they were in Week 1.
“Are they where we need them to be now? No. Are they going to get there? Yes. We will continue to improve each week.”
Bicknell says: “I told our team that if they stick together they are going to be good. Now, I know the people in Scotland have heard me say that before so it is time for us to put up or shut up. Things haven’t worked out for us but we have tough kids who want to be part of a good team so we are going to be okay.”
When the Cologne Centurions visit the Berlin Thunder on Sunday, it will be an emotional day for head coach PETER VAAS, who won a pair of World Bowls with the Thunder in 2001 and 2002.
Vaas, who has started 0-2 for the third year in a row, has seen mistakes undo his Centurions in the opening two weeks of the year, but he is excited about the prospects of his team this season.
He says: “It is frustrating because I really believe we are a good team. The scary part is that this is like in Berlin two years ago. We just need to win. I think we are one of the best teams in the league and it is going to take a lot to beat us.”
Berlin’s RICK LANTZ is 2-0 as a rookie head coach and was happy to remain undefeated following a 28-17 victory over Amsterdam in Week 2. He says: “It was a big win for us. We showed a lot of character because we did not play well in the first half.”
Original Deutschland Derby brings together unbeaten rivals

THE original Deutschland Derby meetings between the Frankfurt Galaxy and Rhein Fire have always been intense affairs.
The fierce rivals have gone head to head in two World Bowls, battled in front of league record crowds and are the two most successful teams in NFL Europe, winning five championships between them (Frankfurt 3, Rhein 2).
Another footnote will be added to the storied rivalry on Saturday when the Galaxy hosts the Fire at the Waldstadion. It will mark the first time a pair of 2-0 teams have met in Week 3 since the London Monarchs hosted the Orlando Thunder at LondonÂ’s Wembley Stadium on April 6, 1991. London won that encounter 35-12.
After opening the 2004 campaign with victories over the Cologne Centurions and Scottish Claymores, Fire players and coaches cannot wait to test their mettle against a Galaxy team that ran out big winners over Rhein in Week 9 of the 2003 regular season (38-7) and in World Bowl XI (35-16).
Fire head coach PETE KUHARCHEK says: “From working against the Galaxy in training camp in Tampa, we know they are a physical team that runs the ball really well. We will have to be really physical on defense to stop them.”
Fire safety ABDUAL HOWARD has played in three Deutschland Derbies and is keen to face off against the Galaxy this weekend.
He says: “The last two games we played against Frankfurt they really embarrassed us so we are going to be up for the game. Emotions will be running high.
“Our hope is to come out with a win but it is going to be a tough game. I’m part of the rivalry now and I know how it feels to play in Rhein-Frankfurt games. It’s my job as a returning player to let the other guys on the team know how big this rivalry really is and to make sure everybody is up for this game.
“The players will see it straight away, as soon as they get to the stadium and see all the fans there. It will be obvious then how big this game is.”
Galaxy head coach MIKE JONES will lead a confident group into battle with the Fire, as he explains: “I am proud of my guys because they are playing as a team.
“We emphasise to our players to play as a family and we can all make big plays. Our offense didn’t play as well as we would have liked last week or move the ball well, but defensive turnovers gave us the chance to score when we needed to.”

McCready joins elite group of receivers with strong starts

BY catching 4 passes for 31 yards against the Rhein Fire in Week 2, Scottish Claymores wide reciver SCOTT McCREADY took his two-game reception total for the season to 15.
That puts McCready among the all-time league leaders in receptions through the opening two games of any season.
McCready, in his third season with the Claymores, caught 11 passes for 67 yards in Week 1 before producing another solid display in Gelsenkirchen.
Upon hearing he had joined the elite group, McCready said: “I’m pretty excited to be playing well but I’m more concerned with the win-loss ratio than I am with individual accolades. It’s nice to play well and you want to play well in order to contribute to the team, but if you don’t win at the end of the day, it’s all for nothing.”
McCready – a Super Bowl winner with the New England Patriots in 2001 - has been the focal point of the Claymores passing attack this season and earned National Player of the Week honours in Week 1.

With eight regular season games remaining, McCready needs to grab just 16 more passes to break the single-season receiving record for a national player (30 receptions by Frankfurt TE WERNER HIPPLER in 1999).
He is currently on pace to make 75 catches this season and that would shatter the club record of 66 set by James Whalen in 2001. That figure would also see him sneak past Jeremaine Copeland, who grabbed a league single season record 74 passes with the Barcelona Dragons in 2000.
McCready says: “We’re looking forward to going back to Scotland and getting this thing back on track.”
McCready is also bidding to become the first national player to lead the league in a major statistical category outside of kicking.
Claymores glad to be home

THE Scottish Claymores will be able to avoid the hustle and bustle of airport departure lounges this week as they return to the familiar surroundings of GlasgowÂ’s Hampden Park after starting the 2004 season with two road games in Germany.
After road losses against the Berlin Thunder and Rhein Fire, the Claymores will trot onto home soil for the first time this year to face the Amsterdam Admirals.
Head coach JACK BICKNELL is excited about having his Claymores play in front of their home fans for the first time in 2004.
He says: “The longer week helps, not traveling helps and of course being at home helps. You don’t have to get on a plane and go somewhere. I’ve never experienced a home game here in Scotland so we are looking forward to what we hope will be a positive experience.
“But there is no reason why you cannot play well on the road in this league and it’s frustrating when you don’t. We have our work cut our for us this week.”
While Claymores players and coaches will be too focused to glance at the record books this week, history suggests teams returning from a two-game road trip to start a season tend to struggle in their opening home contest of the year.
Prior to 2004, seven teams in NFL Europe League history have started the season with two road games. Those clubs then went 1-6 in their first home games after spending two weeks on the road.
The only winners were the 2003 Barcelona Dragons, who were 35-17 victors over Amsterdam. The good news for the Claymores? BarcelonaÂ’s head coach for that trend-breaking victory was Jack Bicknell.

Claymores wide receiver SCOTT COUPER explained how tough ScotlandÂ’s start to the season has been.
He says: “It’s a hefty task because with short weeks you have to get back on the practice field without a day off. It all makes playing on the road a big test.”

History favours 2-0 teams in race for World Bowl berths

THERE is a lot of football to be played before the teams competing for championship glory in World Bowl XII will be known, but history suggests a quick start to the season can be very beneficial.
Since 1995, 13 teams have made 2-0 starts to a season. Those clubs have advanced to World Bowl nine times, winning on four occasions.
During that same period, 13 teams have started the year 0-2 and only one club – the 2002 Berlin Thunder – has reached World Bowl.
Following their victory over the Cologne Centurions in Week 2, the Frankfurt Galaxy confirmed themselves as kings of the quick start in NFL Europe. The Galaxy has started 2-0 for the past three years. They also made 2-0 starts in 1991 and 1996, giving them the most 2-0 starts in league history.
Joining Frankfurt with 2-0 starts this season are the Berlin Thunder and Rhein Fire. Amsterdam, Cologne and Scotland remain winless but know a lot can happen in the next eight weeks to alter the standings.
Centurions head coach PETER VAAS, was in charge of the Berlin Thunder in 2002 when they overcame an 0-3 start to win World Bowl X against Rhein.
He remains confident his team can contend for honours this spring and is taking a philosophical approach to the highs and lows of coaching in NFL Europe.
Vaas says: “Winning is never final and losing is never fatal. I believe we are a really good team and one of the best in this league. I’m proud of the way we are playing – the only thing I am not happy with is the results. We just need that one win to get us started.”

History repeats itself as Fire hero Howard shines in Week 2

RHEIN Fire safety ABDUAL HOWARD first made headlines in NFL Europe for his performance against the Scottish Claymores in Week 3 of the 2003 season.
During a game played over Easter weekend and won 34-17 by the hometown Fire, Howard picked off ClaymoresÂ’ quarterback SHANE STAFFORD in the second half and raced 93 yards the other way for a touchdown.
During the second half of Rhein’s 31-3 defeat of the Claymores on Saturday – in a game that was again played over Easter weekend – Howard took a NATE HYBL pass 79 yards to the end zone to power the Fire to victory at Arena AufSchalke in Gelsenkirchen and earn Defensive Player of the Week honours.
Speaking of his history-repeating heroics, Howard says: “When I was running back the interception, I was only thinking about not getting tackled. But when I got to the end zone I had a very strong feeling of déja vu.
“I always seem to do well against the Claymores. They are a tough group so I am just happy that we came out of this game with a win.”

Eight and counting for Hart

SCOTTISH Claymores kicker ROB HART needs 8 points to become the all-time leading scorer in NFLEL history after notching 3 points at Rhein Fire in Week 2. The Brit kicker is on 322 career points to rank second all time behind JESUS ANGOY, who scored 329 points for the Barcelona Dragons from 1997-2003.

Vaas heads back to Berlin

PETER VAAS will return to the scene of some of his sweetest coaching moments on Sunday as he takes his Cologne Centurions to Berlin to face the Thunder in Week 3 action.
Vaas coached the Thunder for four seasons from 2000-2003, winning two World Bowls and a Coach of the Year award in the process.
During that period, the Thunder became the first team in league history to win back-to-back championships in 2001 and 2002.
This weekend, Vaas will be on the opposing sideline as he attempts to guide the Centurions to their first victory in team history.
Vaas says: “I am very much looking forward to returning to the wonderful city of Berlin and seeing the Thunder fans again.
“I had four fantastic seasons with the Thunder and have great memories of the organisation, the fans and the city of Berlin.
“I am now very excited about having the chance to build a winning team for Cologne and it is a great challenge to be with the Centurions at the start of an exciting new chapter in the league’s history and to have the chance to build a new football tradition.”
With two weeks of the regular season consigned to the history books, the Centurions are still awaiting win number one, but Vaas feels his club are one of the best in NFL Europe and will be successful once they eradicate harmful errors.
He says: “I believe we are a very good team. I don’t believe we have lost to teams who have beaten us – we have beaten ourselves. Before you can win you have to prevent yourself losing and we have to stop losing games.”
The Centurions have followed a familiar trend featuring new franchises joining the league. The Ohio Glory was the only new team in 1992 and lost its first six games before beating Frankfurt; Berlin was the only new team in 1999 and lost its first four games before beating Amsterdam.
With eight weeks of the regular season remaining, Cologne will be out to become just the second expansion franchise to post a winning season in its debut campaign, not including the inaugural 1991 season.
Ohio went 1-9 in 1992, the Scottish Claymores and Rhein Fire posted 2-8 and 4-6 marks respectively in 1995 and Berlin went 3-7 in 1999.
Only the 1995 Amsterdam Admirals made a winning start to life in NFL Europe, posting a 9-1 regular season record before losing World Bowl on home soil to the Frankfurt Galaxy.

NFLEL FACTS:Early TD scorers

ALL three winning teams in Week 2 – Berlin Thunder, Frankfurt Galaxy and Rhein Fire – failed to score the first points of their respective contests. However, they did score the first touchdowns of the game and that statistic seems to be more important when it comes to winning in NFL Europe. Of the six games played to date this season, the teams scoring the first touchdowns have posted a 5-1 record.

NFLEL FACTS:Passing Fancy

QUARTERBACKS have made a strong start to the 2004 campaign. In the six games played this season, quarterbacks have posted a passer rating of 100 or above on eight occasions. DAVID RIVERS (Berlin), RYAN VAN DYKE (Cologne), J.T. OÂ’SULLIVAN (Frankfurt), GREG ZOLMAN (Rhein) and NATE HYBL (Scotland) went over the 100 mark in Week 1. Last weekend saw CLINT STOERNER (Amsterdam), ROHAN DAVEY (Berlin), and CHAD HUTCHINSON (Rhein) post 100-plus days. Also chipping in with a perfect passer rating of 158.3 in Week 2 was Berlin WR RICHARD ALSTON, who threw a 47-yard touchdown strike with his only pass attempt at Amsterdam.

WITH victory against the Cologne Centurions in Week 2, the Frankfurt Galaxy became the first team in NFL Europe League history to reach 60 regular season wins, surpassing the Barcelona Dragons, who notched 59 victories from 1991-2003.

NFLEL FACTS: Home success

COLOGNEÂ’S loss at home to the Galaxy in Week 2 means that of the current NFL Europe League teams, only Amsterdam has won its first home game in franchise history. The Admirals defeated the Barcelona Dragons 17-13 in Week 1 of the 1995 campaign.

FANS of the passing game should enjoy watching the Amsterdam Admirals under head coach BART ANDRUS. In 2003, three of the leading four receivers in NFL Europe were Admirals and QB SHAUN HILL led the league with 2,256 passing yards. German rivals go head to head in first meeting of 2-0 teams since the London Monarchs hosted the Orlando Thunder at Wembley Stadium, London, in Week 3 of the 1991 season… Galaxy has won last two meetings between the clubs, in Week 9 of the 2003 regular season and in World Bowl XI in Glasgow, Scotland. Prior to that, the Fire had won seven games in a row between the two teams… Both teams have been stingy in terms of points allowed this season. Frankfurt has given up a league-low 21 points in two games this year, while the Fire ranks second in that department with 28 points allowed… Frankfurt leads the league with a turnover ratio of plus-8. They are one of just two teams with a positive ratio in the takeaway/giveaway department, having grabbed a league-high 7 interceptions and 3 fumbles, while only giving up a pair of fumbles. Only one team has ever won at home in Week 3 after opening the season with two road games and that was the Jack Bicknell-coached Barcelona Dragons in 2003… The Admirals boast NFL Europe’s top-ranked passing attack, averaging 273 yards per game, while the Claymores have the league’s best unit against the pass, conceding 148.5 yards per game through the air… The Claymores have struggled to stretch the field on offense and are averaging a league-low 8.5 yards per completion… Scotland’s offensive line has also given up a league-high 6 sacks in two games, tying the Admirals for first place in that category… Meeting features the two least productive running games in NFL Europe through the opening two weeks.
