July 31, 2015 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Clinton LumberKings News Release
Clinton, IA - Despite a two-run deficit after half an inning, the Clinton LumberKings (8-27, 34-70) rallied to a 6-3 win over the Burlington Bees (12-23, 47-57) in the series opener Friday night. Neither starting pitcher made it through five innings, as Austin Robichaux (L, 8-5) allowed four runs over three innings, while Clinton's Jarrett Brown (ND) allowed three runs over 4.2 innings.
Brown walked the first two batters of the game, both of which scored. Ayendy Perez scored on an RBI single by Steven Mateo, while David Fletcher scored on Zachary Houchins' sacrifice fly. Brown walked four batters, allowed four hits, as his night ended on a solo home run by Tim Arakawa in the fifth, one out shy of qualifying for the win.
Clinton hit Robichaux hard throughout his three-inning outing. Austin Cousino doubled to begin the bottom of the first and scored on an RBI groundout by Burt Reynolds. Reynolds, in his return to Clinton, finished with a game high three RBIs. The LumberKings tied the game in the second on a hit by pitch and a pair of wild pitches.
Three straight hits opened up the bottom of the third for the LumberKings, as back-to-back RBI doubles by Brock Hebert and Reynolds made it 4-2 Clinton, and the LumberKings led the rest of the way.
The Burlington bullpen duo of Alex Klonowski and Jacob Kopra allowed a pair of unearned runs over the final five innings, which ran the Clinton lead to three runs. Pat Peterson (W, 5-6), in his first relief outing of the season, earned his first win since May 3rd with two innings of shutout relief. Jeffeson Medina (SV, 1) retired the final seven hitters of the game and picked up Clinton's first save since June 29th.
The LumberKings ended July on a high note, despite an overall record of 5-24 in the month. Clinton won two of its final three games in the month, and has a chance to earn its first series win of the second half Saturday night vs. Burlington.
First pitch in Clinton is set for 6:30 CT, as Eddie Campbell (1-0, 1.80) returns to Clinton for his second start of the season, with 14 starts so far in 2015 with the Bakersfield Blaze. Jake Jewell (5-5, 4.37) is set to start for the Bees. The righty has not faced Clinton in 2015. The LumberKings broadcast of the middle game of the series can be heard on WCCI 100.3 FM, WCCIRadio.com, and LumberKings.com.
